SPIED: New 2013 Porsche Cayman Shows its Face on the ‘Ring

The new 911, code-named 991, isn’t the only new model that Porsche is working on these days. The second generation Cayman is getting ready for its debut.

We’ve ve already seen the first camouflaged prototypes of the 2013 Cayman, but now it seems that Porsche is gearing up its development program and testing the car in Nurburgring in view of the anticipated 2012 launch, which will coincide with that of its open-top sibling, the Boxster.

Even though the shape is familiar and closely follows the lines of the current model, every panel in the bodywork is, in fact, new. The second-gen Cayman will bigger in all dimensions, including the wheelbase, to provide more ample space for the driver and his or her passenger.

Go-Fast Porsche Cayman Driver Smacks Ferrari 360 at Supercar Gathering in Malaysia

A couple of mishaps involving private supercars marked this past weekend’s 2011 SuperGT race at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia.

The first incident occurred on the tarmac during a parade of sports and super cars when an overly enthusiastic but sloppy driver of a winged Porsche Cayman rear-ended a Ferrari 360 as it slowed down in front of the crowd. The red Ferrari then bumped into a silver Ferrari California that was in front of it. You’ll have to jump 52 seconds into the first video to see the very expensive fender benders.

The second mishap took place outside the track as the supercars were leaving. It involved a kitted-out Lamborghini Murcielago and a BMW M5. An eyewitness told Jalopnik that he saw the Murcielago and an BMW M5 chasing each other before the crash. You can see what happened to the Lambo in the video after the break.

LA Show: 2009 Porsche Boxster and Cayman Facelift

2009 Porsche Boxster and Cayman FaceliftPride of place on Porsche's Los Angeles Auto Show goes to the refreshed 2009 Boxster and Cayman models that benefit from new flat-six boxer engines, a double-clutch PDK gearbox, suspension revisions and subtle cosmetic changes. On the front end, the 2009 Boxster and Cayman gain new halogen headlights with integrated direction indicators that are reminiscent of those found on the Carrera GT as well as new LED daytime running lights. At the rear end, both models feature slightly larger 'swoopy' taillights, new exhaust tailpipes and redesigned lower bumper areas.

2009 Porsche Boxster and Cayman FaceliftBut as one might expect, what's really important about Porsche's new mid-engined sports cars is well hidden underneath the skin as both models gain much of the tech seen on the recently facelifted 911s. The basic versions now come with a 2.9-liter direct-injection straight six that cranks out 255HP in the Boxster and 265HP in the Cayman, an increase by 10 and, respectively, 20HP over the preceding models. The 3.4-litre power unit in the S-versions, benefiting from direct fuel injection, now delivers 310HP in the Boxster S and 320HP in the Cayman S, a 15 and 25HP bump respectively.

For the first time, both the Boxster and the Cayman are available with Porsche's PDK double-clutch gearbox which not only shifts gears even more quickly but according to Porsche, it also helps reduce fuel consumption. Equipped with the PDK double-clutch gearbox, the Roadster and Coupe accelerate to 100 km/h or 62 mph 0.1 seconds faster than with the manual six-speed gearbox featured on the "basic" models.

2009 Porsche Boxster and Cayman FaceliftPorsche hasn't published the exact performance figures for all versions but it did announce that the Cayman S with PDK and Launch Control accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 while the Boxster 2.9 with its six-speed manual gearbox completes the same exercise in 5.9 sec.

In terms of fuel economy, Porsche said that with the PDK, the new 2.9-litre boxer engine make do with 8.9 lt/100 km (equal to 26.4 mpg US) or 11 percent less than the former models with Tiptronic S. The 3.4-litre versions reduce fuel consumption by an even more significant 16 percent to 9.2 lt/100 km (equal to 25.5 mpg US).

2009 Porsche Boxster and Cayman FaceliftOther improvement for the 2009 models include the new suspension set-up that promises to further enhance handling and the new audio and communication systems in the interior.

Porsche's new mid-engined models are entering the market in February 2009 with the base price for the Boxster in Europe set at €38,600 and the Cayman's at €41,700. The corresponding prices for the Boxster S are €46,700 and the Cayman S €51,500. If you add VAT and national specifications, the Boxster retails in Germany at €46,142, the Cayman at €49,831, the Boxster S, at €55,781 and the Cayman S at €61,493.

Porsche Says Boxster and Cayman Facelift to Feature New Engine and Transmission Tech

We've known for a while now that Porsche is planning to take the wraps off the facelifted Boxster and Cayman mid-engine sports cars at this week's Los Angeles Auto Show. However, Porsche made it official today and even though it did not release any photos, the German automaker disclosed in its Spartan press release that "both cars will come with Porsche's new engine and transmission technology as well as many other significant technical and exterior refinements".

To put it simple, aside from the minor aesthetic revisions (see the spy shots by clicking here), the refreshed 2009 Cayman coupe and Boxster roadster will boast more powerful but also more fuel-efficient direct-injection engines along with Porsche's new double-clutch PDK gearbox that made its debut on the recently facelifted 911s.

Also, for the first time ever at an auto show in the U.S., Porsche will display in Los Angeles the initial car to bear the Porsche name, the historic, 60-year-old mid-engine 356 which has come to be known simply as 'Porsche No.1'. The company's LA Show booth will also feature a Porsche 550 Spyder which is on loan from the special collection of Jerry Seinfeld.

Scoop: 2009 Porsche Cayman Facelift Spied Without Camouflage

2009 Porsche Cayman Facelift Following on from the revamped 911 that was unveiled earlier this year, Porsche is now readying the facelifted variants of the Cayman coupe and Boxster roadster. Both models are due to make their first public appearance at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 19. However, our spy photographers managed to scoop a virtually undisguised Cayman roaming the streets of Germany providing us with an early view of Porsche's entry-level coupe that will compete against the new Nissan 370Z and BMW Z4.

2009 Porsche Cayman Facelift In true evolutionary-Porsche-style, you'll probably need a microscope to spot the differences between the forthcoming and the outgoing model. That said, the most distinguishable change on the 2009 Cayman concerns the newly-shaped rear tail lights that are combined with a reversed license plate holder (...) and a slightly different lower air vents. Up front, Porsche's lazy designers reprofiled the Cayman's headlamps and added a set of LED daytime running lights. While they were at it, they also restyled the air-vents by removing the body-colored rods.

The facelifted Cayman is also expected to receive some minor interior tweaks that will include a slightly larger touch screen for the sat-nav, new trim options and upgraded materials.

So what about under the skin changes? Well, Porsche has been pretty tightlipped about the matter but our sources state that both the Cayman and the Boxster will feature more powerful yet more fuel-efficient direct-injection engines and quite possibly, the firm's new double-clutch PDK gearbox that made its premiere on the new 911s.

The facelifted Porsche Cayman is expected to go on sale across the world in early 2009.

Porsche Design Unveils Special Edition Cayman S

Porsche’s styling arm took a break from designing watches, cell-phones, yachts and we don’t know what else in order to visually enhance the Cayman Coupe. Available in just 777 examples, the “Porsche Design Edition 1” Cayman’s interior and exterior styling is inspired from the famous Chronograph 1s designed by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche 35 years ago. According to the German sports car maker, the market launch of the black Cayman will begin in Germany in November 2007 and in the United States in January 2008. -High res images and details after the jump

PRESS RELEASE: Limited-edition Cayman S as Porsche Design Edition 1

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany, is to expand its mid-engine coupĂ© model range with the launch, in November 2007, of the Cayman S “Porsche Design Edition 1”, a limited-edition special series. Porsche has incorporated various design disciplines into this very special mid-engine coupĂ©: the black exterior emphasizes the purist nature of the 295-bhp sports car and, at the same time, is a nod to Porsche Design and the famous Chronograph 1s designed by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche precisely 35 years previously.

This look, cultivated by Porsche Design, imparts additional luxury and class on the Cayman S: the black leather and Alcantara upholstery harmonizes with refined details such as the instrument dials, the layout of which reflects that of all Porsche Design chronographs. Even the center console, dashboard, and door trims glisten in black, while the three-spoke sports steering wheel, the gear lever, the handbrake grip, and the roof lining are clothed in non-slip black Alcantara. The Porsche logo (crest) is embossed on the headrests.

The vehicle’s technical features are equally sophisticated: beneath the ten-millimeter-lower body, standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) actively controls the hardness of the shock absorbers and it features a special Sport mode that can be activated at the touch of a button for a really dynamic driving feel. Five-millimeter spacers together with 19-inch turbo wheels give the Cayman S “Porsche Design Edition 1” a presence that is reinforced yet further by the 235/35 ZR 19 tires at the front axle and the 265/35 ZR 19 tires at the rear.

The Porsche Design Studio, created by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche 35 years ago, has rapidly become a top international name for industrial design, luxury items, and consumer goods. Top-class functionality and esthetics glisten in the new “Porsche Design Edition 1” collection – in black or black matt, of course.

The Cayman S “Porsche Design Edition 1” standard equipment thus includes an elegant briefcase containing the Flat Six Chronograph, a pocket knife, a pair of sunglasses, a pen, and a key ring – all in black, even the knife blade, in keeping with the vehicle’s styling. The number of Cayman S “Porsche Design Edition 1” units is to be as exclusive as this series-production luxury package: only 777 are being built, and each will be identifiable from a badge on the lid of the glove box.

The market launch of this black Cayman with exclusive Porsche Design equipment, including briefcase, will begin in Germany in November 2007 and in the United States in January 2008. The base price is 58,600 Euros and, factoring in 19 percent value-added tax, the price in Germany will be 69,942 Euros.

Rinspeed Imola based on the Porsche Cayman & Rinspeed Indy 4S optical package for the 911 Carrera 4

    Swiss tuner Rinspeed
announced that it has prepared two exclusive packages for the 2007 Porsche Cayman & 911 Carrera 4 & 4S models. Not bad if you exclude the rather... kitsch "backgammon" roof stickers on the Cayman based, Imola and the dull design of the 20" alloys on both models.

Press Release - Rinspeed Imola - Porsche Cayman : Rinspeed has modified the Cayman characteristics with a low front skirt which takes design clues from the Indy look which was introduces for the 997 model series. The big carbon air intakes with the integrated parking lights remind of the current 997 Turbo model. New side skirts let the power house from Stuttgart appear lowered and sleeker. The complete rear skirt features a carbon difusor insert. Special attention was given to the exchangeable rear skirt inserts which allow either center or a dual exhaust systems. Headers, metal catalytic converters and stainless steel exhaust systems round up the exciting program.

The contact to the road is taken care by five spoke aluminum wheels C5/1 in the format of 8.5 x 20" with tires of the dimension 235/30-20 at the front axle and 11 x 20" with tires 305/25-20 at the rear. The suspension is lowered by 25mm by an especially laid out and engineered suspension kit which is adapted to the serial PASM system. Four way adjustable coil over suspension kits are also available. The interior is enhanced by a sporty steering wheel in F1 look, aluminum shift knob, aluminum pedals sets, emergency brake lever as well as velour floor mats.

Rinspeed Indy 4S – Porsche 911 Carrera 4 & 4S : The original front skirt is replaced by a complete Rinspeed front skirt which enhances the aerodynamic down force. Side skirts let the 997 appear lower and more dynamic. Additionally, a rear skirt with a diffuser optic has been developed. The tuner also offers aluminum wheel in the Design C5/1 in 20" for this model range. Wheels of 8.5 x 20" and tires of the maximal width of 245/30-20 can be fitted on the front axle where as the rear takes 11 x 20" wheels with tires of the dimension 305/25-20

Apart of the aerodynamics package, Rinspeed also offers a wide exhaust program. The possibilities range from oval end pipes to a flow optimized sport exhausts to high performance exhaust systems which include headers, metal catalytic converters and rear mufflers. Suspension wise Rinspeed opts for sporty lowering springs (approximately 25mm). Alternatively adjustable coil-over suspension kits can be ordered. Both sets are compatible with the original PASM system. The interior is enhanced by full leather trims, airbag sport steering wheels, aluminum pedals, aluminum foot rests and shift knobs.
