Michael Sprague, Kia’s VP for marketing and communication describes their relationships to the New York Times likes this:

“Kia Motors America operates as a completely separate sales, marketing and distribution organization in the United States. [Hyundai and Kia share engineering efficiencies] similar in many ways to other global automakers.”

Toyota and Honda want to Win Back Sales Share from Hyundai Sonata with New Models

Not too long ago, if someone told you that a South Korean model would challenge America’s best selling sedan, the Toyota Camry, you would have probably laughed in his or her face.

Needless to say, a lot has changed over the past few years with Hyundai and in particular its latest Sonata sedan, not only challenging, but this past May even surpassing the Camry in U.S. sales for the first time in history.

Of course, the fact that Toyota’s production capabilities were seriously affected by the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan, played a significant role in Hyundai’s accomplishment.

Hyundai Releases Sketches of its 2010 Equus Flagship Luxury Sedan

Hyundai has published a set of teaser renderings of its new flagship saloon that will be officially introduced in February, 2009. Codenamed VI, the new luxury sedan will sit atop the Genesis in Hyundai's car range serving as a replacement for the outdated Equus. The VI's design looks pretty aggressive in these pics, but then again all cars look good in teaser sketches...

Unlike the front-wheel drive Equus, the VI will adopt the Genesis' rear-wheel drive architecture as Hyundai wants to make it a more credible competitor against the Lexus LS460, BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Powertrain options will. include a 3.8-liter Lambda V6 engine and a 4.6-liter Tau V8 while a top-of-the-range stretched limousine edition that will bow in the second half of 2009 will feature a 5.0-liter variant of the Tau V8.

2010 Hyundai VI Equus Compared to the Equus, the VI will be longer, wider and taller measuring 5,160mm in length, 1,900mm in width and 1,495mm in height. The sedan's highlights will include a second-generation Vehicle Stability Management System (VSM2), a Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) that employs a vision sensor to monitor traffic lane markers and a Pre-Safety Seatbelt System which on detecting an imminent front-end collision, will automatically reel-in the safety belts to maximize the safety of the occupants.

For the time being, Hyundai has no plans to export VI to the North American or European markets.

Global Car Sales to Drop 7.7% to 60 Million Units in 2009, according to Hyundai Chairman

South Korea's largest automaker, Hyundai, expects that the worldwide financial crisis will continue to have a negative effect on global auto sales throughout 2009. Today, the firm's Vice Chairman Choi Jae Kook told Hyundai's employees that the company expects global sales to drop at least 7,7 percent to 60 million units in 2009 from around 65 million in 2008. "Even Toyota is predicting an operating loss, which was unthinkable before," Choi said in his speech to the company's employees.

As for Hyundai and its Kia affiliate, the company adjusted its forecast for 2008 sales this month from 4.8 million to 4.2 million. Currently, the two automakers have a combined production capacity of around 5.3 million vehicles annually.

Hyundai Reveals New Six-Speed Auto Transmission

Set to be rolled out on selected models in 2009 onwards, Hyundai's new six-speed automatic transmission promises to boosts fuel economy by 12% and is 12kg (26.5 lbs) lighter and has 62 fewer parts than a 5-speed auto transaxle. With the introduction of the new transmission, Hyundai becomes only the third company in the world to develop its own six-speed automatic transaxle after Toyota and a GM/Ford joint venture.

Designed for transverse engine applications in cars and SUVs, the new compact transaxle that went into production in December will be offered in a total of five variants to accommodate a wide range of petrol and diesel engines. Overall, 16 different Hyundai models will get this transmission.

"The strength of our design is its completely unique layout, which makes it smaller, more compact and lighter than any other six-speed on the market today," said Hong-Min Kim, the project manager of the transaxle at Hyundai R&D Centre.

The new tranny will make its debut in the new Hyundai Grandeur equipped with a 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine. Hyundai said that in this application, the new gearbox delivers a 12.2 percent gain in fuel economy and is 2.5 percent quicker in zero to 62mph (100km/h) acceleration times (7.8sec versus 8.0 sec).It also delivers an 11 percent improvement in 60km/h to 100km/h overtaking performance (4.0 sec versus 4.5 sec).

2010 Kia Soul Mini-MPV Scooped Inside and Out

First of all, allow us to say that it is not at all certain that Kia's new mini MPV model will use the Soul name. However, the car which bears the codename YN, does share the same platform with the new Kia Soul as well as with the Hyundai i20. Set to take the fight to the Opel Meriva, Nissan Note and Honda Jazz when it's launched at the end of 2009, Kia's new little MPV will offer more space and practicality than its faux-crossover Soul sibling.

2010 Kia Soul Mini MPV The prototype model's heavy camouflage does not allow us to see any exterior details other than the large panoramic roof, but it is apparent that Kia's mini MPV will be less flashy and funky than the Soul. Inside, as is evident from the scoop photos, the mini MPV uses the same three-gauge instrument panel and three-spoke steering wheel as the Soul, though the center console has been completely redesigned. Buyers should expect to find lots of clever folding seats and plenty of storage compartments.

Powertrain options will include 1.6-liter petrol and diesel engines, both producing an output of 126HP, while some markets will also get a 115HP 1.6-liter diesel and a 142HP 2.0-liter gasoline engine.

2010 Kia Soul Mini MPV The new mini-MPV will be manufactured by Kia's sister brand Hyundai at the company's new factory at Nosovice in the Czech Republic, although Korean versions are likely to be built in Korea. Production of Hyundai's version of the mini-MPV, which will replace the Matrix, will start in the Czech factory in 2010.

Expect to see Kia's little minivan making its global premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2009.

2010 Hyundai Tuscon SUV Scooped

2010 Hyundai Tuscon The second-generation model of Hyundai's Tucson SUV that is due for a market launch in mid-to-late 2009 has been caught by our spy photographers outside the Korean firm's European headquarters in Germany. Even though the prototype model seen here was wrapped around with enough plastic to prevent prying eyes from catching a glimpse of the SUV's styling details, the sloppier rear roofline suggests that the 2010 Tuscon will look less robust and even more "crossoverish" than the current generation model.

2010 Hyundai Tuscon Our spy photographers also managed to snap a few shots of the compact SUV's interior which was totally uncovered. The 2010 Tuscon's dashboard has been completely overhauled with the center console featuring a similar design to that of the i30 hatchback.

Developed on Hyundai's compact architecture, the Tuscon will share the same platform with the forthcoming Kia Sportage. Like the current model, the new Tuscon will be offered in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions.

2010 Hyundai Tuscon Hyundai's new proposal in the compact SUV segment will feature a revamped petrol engine line-up. In Europe and other selected markets the Tuscon will also be available with Hyundai's newly developed 4-cylinder turbo diesel that will be offered in two versions with 2.0- and 2.2-liters displacement and outputs of 184HP and 200HP respectively. Both diesel units will be matted to either a 6-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual gearbox.
