Volvo Celebrates the 10th Anniversary of its Pioneering SCC Study

Most concepts presented at motor shows remain just that: a stylistic exercise by the automaker’s designers, a “what if” proposal, a flight of fancy. At best, a few of them make it into production, mostly in a much more conventional form. But as with every rule, there are always an exception.

Volvo’s SCC Concept is one such example. Presented at the 2001 Detroit Motor Show, the Swedish carmaker’s Safety Concept Car was more than just a glimpse into the future or the main inspiration behind the C30’s design: it was the car that, above any other, influenced Volvo’s technological advances.

Study Shows Volvo’s Active Safety Systems Reduce Accidents

The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released a study showing that Volvo’s XC60 active safety systems contribute to it being engaged in 27% fewer damage accidents and 51% fewer bodily injury accidents than other mid-size luxury SUVs.

Always according to the study, the XC60 is also 19% less likely to be involved in accidents compared to other models in Volvo’s range. IIHS said that this is due to the SUV's standard low-speed collision avoidance system called City Safety.

Volvo Aims to Boost Sales in China, Become Known for More than Safety

Volvo wants to increase its sales in China by at least 60% this year, to 50,000 cars, and to 200,000 by 2015. And how does the Swedish carmaker, which is owned by China’s Geely, intend to do so? By adding user-friendly comforts and a touch of luxury, according to Volvo’s CEO, Stefan Jacoby.

The reason for this shift is that Volvo’s greatest asset, safety, is not a unique selling point any more now that most rivals have made similar advances in this sector.

Buying a New Car? Why Not Bundle A European Holiday

Did you know that there are holiday packages that bundle airfares, accommodation and cosmetic surgery? It’s a sort of incentive program for women (and some men) to have their surgery done overseas and is especially popular in Britain and Australia. Well, as some of you may already know, there are similar programs for people who want to buy a new car.

These so-called, “European Delivery Programs” are offered by companies as diverse as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Volvo. Effectively you’re bundling a discount European vacation with your new car purchase.

Volvo to Extend Driving Range of its EVs by Going the Way of the Chevy Volt

Electric Vehicles, or EVs, are the future. Or so the automakers say. And they would be correct, if it wasn’t for a significant disadvantage over petrol or diesel powered models: their abysmal range which makes them suitable only for limited city use.

Volvo is taking measures to solve this problem and make its EVs attractive to the public by adding an extra 1,000 km (621 miles) to their range. The solution, which has also been adopted by other models such as the Chevrolet Volt and the Audi A1 E-Tron concept, is the addition of a “range extender” internal combustion engine.

Junk TV: Netherland’s Worst Driver Confirms his Credentials

From the imaginative world of TV reality shows comes our next story. The show in question is “Wie wordt De Allerslechtste Chauffeur Van Nederland?” which is Dutch for “Who is the Worst Driver in The Netherlands?”

However, once you watch the video after the break, you may considering an alternative title in the likes of “Who is the Most Idiotic Reality TV Show Producer in the World” since the enlightened creators of the show came up with the fabulous idea of testing Netherlands' most incompetent drivers on an unsafe course.

Report: Owners Leasing Cars May Be Able to Make a Profit

With the recent surge in used car prices in the U.S., many people leasing vehicles have discovered the surprising fact that the market value of their automobiles is greater than the dealer’s quoted residual (buyout) price.

All a would-be lessee needs to do is buy the car from the dealer and sell it on privately. The dealer gets the residual amount and the former lessee pockets a tidy sum.

Take the example of a 2008 Volvo XC90. With more than twelve months left on the lease, the dealer’s buyout price was a quoted US$18,500. Compare this to the amount the lessee was likely to get by selling the car privately: a far more substantial US$27,000. That’s a profit of US$8,500!

Today’s Cars Are Nigh Impossible to Steal, Says Motor Industry

In the UK, car theft is down by more than 60% over the last seven years thanks to improvements in anti-theft technology. Coded car keys, alarms, immobilisers, better locks, strengthened glass and built-in tracking devices have made the modern automobile virtually impossible to steal.

Some 80% of car thefts now require would-be thieves to steal the owner’s keys or otherwise load their targets onto trailers for transport. And even then, tracking systems in some high-end cars mean these cars are recovered rather quickly.

Volvo to Axe S40/V50 duo from US Line-up Due to Poor Sales

Volvo will stop selling its mid-size sedan, the S40, and its station wagon “twin”, the V50, in the USA during the 2012 MY. The reason? You guessed it; poor sales. According to Volvo spokesman Dan Johnston, US deliveries of the two models were disappointingly low with the S40 down 29% in 2010, while the V50 fared even worse, with its sales dropping by more than 50%. The King of Overkill has Found his Queen in Toronto

And by “King of Overkill” we mean, of course, the….how should we put this delicately… excessively ornamented Porsche Cayenne SUV photographed outside a dollar store in Ontario, Canada, last week by Carscoop reader Jonathan Fernando.

This blonde Swedish diva [aka a previous generation Volvo S40 finished in a yellow hue] was spotted all dressed up and ready to meet the king of her dreams at a parking lot in Toronto, Canada, by another one of our readers, James Dong.

New Volvo FH16 is the World's Most Powerful Series Production Truck

With 700HP and a mind-blowing 3,150 Nm (2,323 lbs.ft) of torque, Volvo Truck's FH16 is now the most powerful series-manufactured truck in the world. Volvo's flagship truck is fitted with a new D16G engine that is a further development of the company's current D16 engine producing 660HP. In addition to an extra 40 horsepower and higher torque, the new 16.0-liter engine produces cleaner exhaust gases and is certified for the new Euro 5 European emission requirements that come into force on October 1st 2009.

"The Volvo FH16 is intended for the very heaviest and most demanding of transport operations. It is also a highly prestigious truck for the customer who is looking for something truly out of the ordinary. Now, with 700 hp, the Volvo FH16 sets itself apart from everything else in the industry," said Staffan Jufors, President and CEO of Volvo Trucks.

Aside from the 700HP version, the Volvo FH16 with the D16G engine is also available at Euro 5 with new 600-horsepower and 540-horsepower variants.

Volvo Presents New 2.4-liter Twin-Turbo Diesel with 205HP - 38MPG in S80

Volvo has announced a new 2.4-liter 5-cylinder diesel engine that will find its way under the hood of the S80 saloon. The new D5 diesel uses an array of innovative engineering solutions such as sequential twin turbochargers, ceramic glow-plugs and piezoelectric fuel injectors. The result is an improved power output of 205hp and 420Nm of torque combined with low fuel emissions of 164g/km and a fuel consumption of just 6.2 lt /100 km (38mpg US - 45.6mpg UK) - which is a pretty good figure for a car the size of the S80.

"Our brief was to develop a modern performance diesel engine that meets the Euro 5 standard," said Derek Crabb, Volvo Vice President, Powertrain Engineering. "When the project got under way, our goal was to bring fuel consumption down to 6.4 lt /100km (44.1mpg UK) in the S80, which, after all, is a relatively large car," recalls Derek Crabb.

"As the work progressed, we saw that we could beat that target and today we are actually down to 6.2 lt / 100km (45.6mpg UK). With an automatic gearbox we have been able to reduce the consumption by more than 8 percent, from 7.3 to 6.7 lt / 100km (38.7 to 42.2mpg UK), which is a significant improvement."

The new D5 diesel will be available in the S80 in the second quarter of 2009 while it certain that Volvo will offer the engine in other models, including the forthcoming S60 sedan.

Volvo S60 Sports Sedan Concept Revealed: 40 High-Res Pics and Details

Volvo S60 Concept These are the first images of the Volvo S60 Concept car which will be unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show in early January 2009. According to the Swedish automaker, the concept gives an indication of what the all-new Volvo S60 will look like when it's launched in 2010. Even though the production model will be less dramatic than the prototype, it is clear that the S60 will be a distinct proposition in the compact executive sedan segment. The Swedes wisely opted for a four-door coupe look for the S60 as it differentiates their proposal from established rivals such as the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes C-Class.

Volvo S60 Concept "The concept car's exterior gives a clear indication of what customers can expect of the all-new S60. On the inside we've been even more daring," says Volvo Cars Design Director Steve Mattin. One of the concept's most prominent features but one that will not pass into production is the lack of a B-pillar and the rear parallelogram doors that open by pressing a button. The doors pop out and glide parallel with the side of the car until they reach their end position by the rear wheel.

Another interesting detail concerns the headlamps as the lights create a silhouette of two miniature Viking longboats sailing side by side, one for main beam and one for dipped beam.

With a four-seat layout, the S60 Concept's cabin features the firm's trademark floating center stack which was created out of handmade, solid Orrefors crystal. The speedometer is designed as a three-dimensional glass spiral with the low numbers appear closest to the eye and the figures appear to be increasingly distant as the driver accelerates. Overall, the interior boasts a fresh and relatively uncluttered styling.

The engine that Volvo has chosen for the S60 Concept is a new four-cylinder 1.6-litre petrol unit which uses high-efficiency GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) technology producing an output of 180 HP. The Swedes claim that this engine in combination with a range of other technical measures makes it possible to cut carbon dioxide emissions to 119 g/km with an average consumption of just 5.0 l/100 km (47.0mpg US).

Volvo S60 Concept Volvo's first production car with GTDi technology will be introduced during the second half of 2009.

As a true Volvo, the S60 is also packed with several safety gadgets including a new technology that can detect a pedestrian who steps out into the path of the car automatically activating the car's full braking power if the driver does not respond to the danger. The technology, Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and pedestrian detection, will be introduced in the production S60.
