Volvo Presents New 2.4-liter Twin-Turbo Diesel with 205HP - 38MPG in S80

Volvo has announced a new 2.4-liter 5-cylinder diesel engine that will find its way under the hood of the S80 saloon. The new D5 diesel uses an array of innovative engineering solutions such as sequential twin turbochargers, ceramic glow-plugs and piezoelectric fuel injectors. The result is an improved power output of 205hp and 420Nm of torque combined with low fuel emissions of 164g/km and a fuel consumption of just 6.2 lt /100 km (38mpg US - 45.6mpg UK) - which is a pretty good figure for a car the size of the S80.

"Our brief was to develop a modern performance diesel engine that meets the Euro 5 standard," said Derek Crabb, Volvo Vice President, Powertrain Engineering. "When the project got under way, our goal was to bring fuel consumption down to 6.4 lt /100km (44.1mpg UK) in the S80, which, after all, is a relatively large car," recalls Derek Crabb.

"As the work progressed, we saw that we could beat that target and today we are actually down to 6.2 lt / 100km (45.6mpg UK). With an automatic gearbox we have been able to reduce the consumption by more than 8 percent, from 7.3 to 6.7 lt / 100km (38.7 to 42.2mpg UK), which is a significant improvement."

The new D5 diesel will be available in the S80 in the second quarter of 2009 while it certain that Volvo will offer the engine in other models, including the forthcoming S60 sedan.

New Volvo S80L with Long-Wheelbase Introduced in China

European automakers are doing their best to fulfill the 'procrustean fantasies' of Chinese buyers who seem to find the executive-feeling of a long-wheelbase sedan completely irresistible. Following Audi and its LWB A4 sedan, Volvo presented the S80L, at the 6th Guangzhou Motor Show in south China. The long-wheelbase version of the S80 sedan has been specifically designed for the Chinese market and it will be built at the CFMA Chongqing plant. Compared to its standard sibling, the S80L features a 14cm or 5.5-inches longer wheelbase with all this extra length benefiting rear-seat passengers.

"Volvo made a decision to produce its flagship sedan, the S80, in China, with upgrades to suit the tastes of Chinese consumers' and to meet the increasing demand for premium cars in China," said Volvo Car China CEO, Dr. Alexander Klose.

Volvo S80 and V70 2.5FT: With 200Hp Flexfuel E85 Engine

Swedish carmaker Volvo is expanding its flexfuel line-up with the introduction of S80 and V70 2.5FT, both of which are equipped with a 5-cylinder, 2.5-litre turbocharged Flexifuel engine delivering 200 hp and 300 Nm of torque. The Flexifuel cars can run on E85 bioethanol or 95-octane unleaded petrol - or any mix of these two fuels.

Volvo says that from a technological viewpoint, it would have been possible to reach a higher output, but that would have translated in higher fuel consumption. The EU combined figure for both the S80 and V70 2.5T is 9.2 l/100 km or 25.6 MPG with the manual gearbox and 10.2 l/100 km or 23.0 MPG (V70) and 10.1 l/100 km or 23.3 MPG (S80) with the automatic gearbox. No thanks to its lower energy content, fuel consumption when running on E85 is approx 30-40% higher than when running on petrol.

2009 Volvo S80 & XC90 Executive Models

For the 2009 model year, Volvo is enhancing its most exclusive line-up, the S80 and XC90 Executive models with the addition of massage and ventilation functions in the front seats along with a range of improved materials and trim details.

Though it would have been nice if Volvo offered a nice tall Swedish blonde gal to do the massage, the front seats are actually equipped with five built-in inflatable pockets built that pump and drain sequentially to create a wave-like motion (adjustable at two hardness levels) that massages the lower back. -Continued

Other upgrades on the S80 and XC90 Exclusive models include new upholstery in perforated soft hide; new lumbar support setting that uses the same inflatable cushions for adjusting the massage function; centre console cover in soft leather; 8" wide VGA LCD screens integrated into the rear of the front seat headrests instead of the previous 7" units and a new analogue clock set into the wood inlay in the instrument panel.

Furthermore, S80 Executive gets additional ambient lighting in the door panels and storage compartments, and in the front cup holders and along the floor by the front seat, aluminium sliding cover in the front console and updated crystal glasses with an engraved Executive emblem. Finally the XC90 Executive features new hand-sewn leather in the door handles.

SEMA Show: Volvo S80 350Hp Bioethanol Concept

From Frankfurt to Las Vegas; in a fortnight from today, Volvo will travel half the way around the world to present a concept version of its S80 sedan, at the Las Vegas SEMA Show (Speciality Equipment Manufacturers Association). The S80 HP has been co-developed with German tuning and motor sport experts, Heico Sportiv. Apart from the aluminum paint job and the body/chassis mods, it’s most prominent feature is the modified 6cylinder turbocharged engine that can run on E85 (85% bioethanol, 15% petrol).

According to Volvo, the T6 engine produces around 350Hp at 5,500 rpm and 550 Nm or 406 lbs/ft of torque between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h will take around 5.8 sec. -Press release and pictures after the jump

Volvo S80 High Performance version flexes its muscles at SEMA in Las Vegas

German tuning and motor sport experts Heico Sportiv has developed a spectacular high-performance version of the Volvo S80.

With a high-tech aluminium-look exterior and a 350 hp bioethanol engine, the S80 High Performance Concept is destined to be a true attention-grabber at the SEMA show in Las Vegas.

"We wanted to explore how far we could take a special high-performance version of the S80. Heico Sportiv's impressive track record in motor sports and Volvo tuning made them the perfect partner for the job," says Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President Brand, Business and Product Strategy at Volvo Cars. He adds:

"Personally, I think the result is absolutely stunning. Both when it comes to the exterior and interior design as well as the impressive muscle under the bonnet."

The turbocharged T6 engine has been modified to run on E85 (85 percent bioethanol,15 percent petrol) - a biofuel that is becoming increasingly widely available throughout Europe.

The T6 engine in the Heico S80 High Performance Concept boasts around 350 horsepower at 5500 rpm and a massive 550 Nm of torque between 1500 and 4000 rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h will take around 5.8 seconds.

"The engine development is not yet finalized, so we hope to reach an even higher horsepower figure when the car is ready for SEMA," says Heico Sportiv's president Holger Hedtke.

All Wheel Drive and sports suspension

The Heico S80 High Performance Concept features Volvo's electronically controlled All Wheel Drive system with Instant Traction. The car also has specially developed sport suspension. New shocks and springs lower the chassis by 40 millimetres. The 6-pot sport brake system has blue callipers featuring the Heico Sportiv logo, sports brake pads and 355x32 mm discs.

The specially developed 20-inch VOLUTION®X. forged alloy wheels are shod with 255/30R20 tyres from Continental.

"When it comes to the driving experience, we aimed at tuning all the components so we get a dynamic yet harmonious result. In other words, a true sports car experience without losing the luxurious and comfortable touch that is the hallmark of the S80," says Holger Hedtke.

    Spectacular aluminium-colour effect

The exclusive aluminium metal-effect colour of the Heico S80 High Performance Concept radiates a distinctive technical look. "To bring out the shiny, "real metal" effect was a major challenge. This type of paint is normally not used to cover a whole car. All told, the bodywork features seven coats of paint. The coat that gives the aluminium effect doesn't allow any touch-ups afterwards, so you have to get it right from the beginning. The whole process takes two weeks," says Holger Hedtke.

All other parts, such as the tailpipe trim, window mouldings, front grill and rub strips are coated with matte finish black chrome. All body parts are handcrafted. The car's body kit has redesigned wide skirts all round. The front features integrated spoiler flaps, three larger air ducts, integrated LED daytime running lights and an integrated sport grille with the Volvo iron mark. The exhaust system is made of stainless steel throughout and the exhaust tailpipes are integrated into the wide rear spoiler. There is also a rear deck spoiler.

    Mystic Blue interior

The bespoke interior has full high-quality leather in Mystic Blue with matching blue stitching and Heico Sportiv logo, both on the sport-contoured front seats and the two individual "bucket" seats in the rear. The safety belts and floor-mats are also blue.

There is a sports steering wheel trimmed in leather and a leather-trim gear lever with a silver carbon accent. The extended floating centre stack is covered with silver carbon fibre. The centre stack also features integrated controls for the rear seat entertainment system and a storage space with a handmade blind. All decorative trim elements are made of silver carbon fibre. The illuminated entrance trim in stainless steal and glass features the Heico Sportiv logo

Volvo Introducing New 4-Cylinder Engines For S80 & V70

Starting from January 2008, Volvo will offer two new four-cylinder engines to the S80 sedan and the all-new V70 estate ranges -a 2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol and a 2-litre turbodiesel engine. The 2.0L petrol unit delivers 145 Hp and 185 Nm of torque offering an avg. fuel consumption of 8.3 l/100 km (28.4 mpg) in the V70 and 8.1 l/100 km (29 mpg) in the S80. The 2.0L turbodiesel unit delivers 136 Hp and 320 Nm of torque providing an avg. fuel consumption of 6.0 l/100 km (39.2 mpg) in the V70 and 5.9 l/100 km (39.9) in the S80. No word on performance figures, but you don’t have to be rocket scientist to gather that a 136 or 145 Hp engine in an S80 / V70 aint going to give any performance at all. -Click “Read More…” below for the press release

Volvo V70 and S80 available with four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines

The Volvo Car Corporation is extending the engine range in the Volvo V70 and Volvo S80.

Both models will be available with four-cylinder engines later this year - either a 2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with 145 hp or a 2-litre turbodiesel with 136 hp.

"More and more buyers focus on fuel economy and low CO2 emissions. It is highly important for us to give them more choices by making our competitive four-cylinder engines available in the new V70 and S80 models too. The 2-litre alternatives offer a very attractive combination of fuel economy and driving pleasure," says Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President Brand, Business and Product Strategy at Volvo Cars.

The 2.0 petrol engine has 145 hp (107 kW) and 185 Nm of torque. It is a four-cylinder, normally aspirated unit - a modern, lightweight aluminium engine featuring four-valve technology and a modern fuel injection system. The engine offers the same efficient combustion technology and exhaust gas treatment as other Volvo engines, offering good fuel economy and minimises exhaust emissions.

Fuel consumption in the V70 is 8.3 l/100 km (EU combined, preliminary figure) and 8.1 l/100 km (EU combined, preliminary figure) in the S80.

    Diesel with second-generation common rail

The 2.0D is a four-cylinder turbodiesel with 136 hp (100kW) and 320 Nm of torque. It delivers rapid throttle response and a well-balanced sensitivity to the accelerator to offer the driver good control and driving pleasure.

The engine has second-generation common rail technology - the same as in Volvo's larger diesel models. The cylinder head is made of aluminium.

Fuel consumption in the V70 is 6.0 l/100 km (EU combined, preliminary figure) and 5.9 l/100 km (EU combined, preliminary figure) in the S80.

A Diesel Particulate Filter is fitted as standard. The filter significantly reduces unburned soot particles in the emissions, thereby reducing the negative environmental impact. The system is cleaned (regenerated) automatically as the contents of the filter are burnt off at regular intervals.
