Mazda to Present Circuit Trial Versions of New Mazda3, Mazda6 and RX-8 at Tokyo Salon

While the 2009 Tokyo Auto Salon that will be held in Japan from January 9 to 11, isn't considered a major event from a global perspective, nevertheless Mazda has announced that it will showcase a lineup of 13 vehicles and eco-friendly technologies. Mazda's exhibits will include the next-generation Axela (known as the Mazda3 in international markets), which is being revealed for the first time in Japan. Other exhibits will include "Circuit Trial" versions of the new Axela, RX-8, Demio (Mazda2) and Atenza (Mazda6) and six customized versions of the new Biante minivan, which went on sale earlier this year.

It goes without saying that the most attention-grabbing models are the Circuit Trial versions that have been developed by Mazdaspeed. The racing circuit ready variants of the Mazda2, Mazda6, Mazda3 and RX-8 will feature an array of equipment and performance upgrades that include M'z Custom aeroparts, Recaro bucket seats and large diameter tires and alloy wheels made by Yokohama.

New Mazda3 Hatchback to Make North American Debut at Detroit Show

With all the drop outs at the 2009 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), any news, is good news. Mazda on its behalf has confirmed that the all-new Mazda3 5-door hatchback that made its world premiere at the Bologna Show earlier this month, will make its North American debut at NAIAS which will be held in Detroit from January 11 through January 25, 2009. Like its sedan sibling, the U.S.-spec Mazda hatchback will be offered with a choice of two 4-cylinder engines, a 2.0-liter unit with 148HP and a new 2.5-liter unit with 167HP.

Video: 2010 Mazda3 Hatchback Driving Footage

At the Bologna Motor Show, Mazda staged the world premiere of the all-new 2010 Mazda hatchback. The launch of the Mazda3 5-Door follows on the heels of the debut of the 4-Door sedan, which made its world premiere at the current Los Angeles Auto Show. Both cars are scheduled to go on sale in spring of 2009. For some reason, Mazda decided to release a 10 minute-long, soundless video of its new hatch driving around to 'nowhere-land'. For your well being, we cut it down to 3-minutes and added a 'smiley' song to keep you from sleeping...

2010 Mazda3 Hatchback Bows at Bologna Show: 27 High-Res Photos

2010 Mazda3 Hatchback Following an earlier preview through a set of teaser pictures , Mazda took the veil off the all-new '3' hatchback at Italy's Bologna Motorshow that runs until the 4th of December. The latest iteration of the Mazda3 that was first revealed in sedan form at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November -see here, will go on sale in both bodystyles in Europe next spring with the U.S. and other international markets following around the same time. Mazda's new hatchback will be offered in the States with two gasoline units, a 148HP 2.0-liter and a 167HP 2.5-liter engine, while Europe will get a different engine lineup suiting the needs of the local markets.

The Mazda3 Hatchback's European range includes the newly developed MZR-CD 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine, carried over from the all-new Mazda6, in addition to the gasoline MZR-1.6-litre and 2.0-litre (now with the option of a 5-speed Activematic transmission), and the MZ-CD 1.6-litre turbo diesel.

2010 Mazda3 Hatchback The 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine will be offered in two variants, a high power version with a maximum torque of 400 Nm at 1,800-3,000 rpm and an output of 185HP at 3500 rpm, and a standard power version with a maximum torque of 360 Nm at 1,800-2,600 rpm and an output of 150HP at 3500 rpm.

According to Mazda, fuel economy is improved by 7 to 10 percent compared to the outgoing 2.0-litre diesel engine in the previous model, attaining 5.4 l/100 km (43.6 mpg U.S.) for the standard power version and 5.6 l/100 km (42.0 mpg U.S.) for the high power version.

New Mazda3 5-Door Hatchback: First Photos and Details

2009 Mazda3 HatchbackA week after the debut of the 2010 Mazda3 Sedan (known as the Axela in Japan) at the LA Auto Show, the Japanese automaker issued the first photographs of its new '3' hatchback that will make its world premiere at the Bologna Motor Show in Italy on December 3, 2008. Not surprisingly, Mazda's new Ford Focus and VW Golf rival adopts the same fresh and more aggressive styling characteristics as its saloon counterpart.

2009 Mazda3 HatchbackThe Japanese firm claims that under-the-skin changes include "more efficient powertrains, Mazda-typical weight saving engineering solutions and fine tuned 'best in class' aerodynamics." When it goes on sale in Europe in the first quarter of 2009, the Mazda3 5-door hatchback will be offered with a new range-topping 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine available with 150 and 185HP versions.

European buyers will also be able to opt for the existing 1.6- and 2.0-litre petrol engines and the 1.6-litre turbo diesel. According to Mazda, all petrol engine versions of the new '3' will offer further environmental performance, including the world's first vehicle catalyst to be constructed using single nanotechnology.

In the North American market, the Mazda3 hatchback is expected to be offered with the same 2.0- and 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engines as the Sedan model.

2010 Mazda3 Sedan: The Rejected Design Proposals

Rarely do automakers disclose redundant design proposals for a vehicle that has just been introduced to the public like the all-new 2010 Mazda3 Sedan (click here for our high-res image gallery and here for the video). But it appears that Mazda's people are so confident with the outcome that the Japanese company decided to publish a selection of rejected sketches for its new compact sedan that premiered less than a week ago at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show.

If these proposals are indeed the designs that made it to the final round, we reckon that Mazda's execs made the right choice. Click through to see what other designs had been considered for the new Mazda3 Sedan along with photos of clay models and sketches of the actual production model.
