Fiat Completes Purchase of Chrysler from U.S. and Canadian Governments, US Taxpayers Lose $1.3 Billion

The Fiat Group today purchased the remaining Chrysler LLC shares held by the U.S. and Canadian governments. The Italian company acquired a 1.5% fully diluted stake in Chrysler Group LLC from Canada for US$125 million, and a 6% stake from the United States Department of the Treasury for a price of US$ 500 million.
After acquiring the shares in the two separate deals, the Fiat Group now controls a 53.5% fully diluted equity interest in Chrysler LLC.
Upon the completion of the deal, U.S. Assistant Secretary for Financial Stability Tim Massad released this statement:
“With today's closing, the US government has exited its investment in Chrysler at least six years earlier than expected. This is a major accomplishment and further evidence of the success of the Administration’s actions to assist the US auto industry, which helped save a million jobs during the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.”

Fiat Marks 500 Launch in China with 100 “First Edition” Models

The first Fiat 500 to make its way into China was presented today in Shanghai by Fiat Group Executive Vice President for International Operations, Lorenzo Sistino.

Report: New Alfa Romeo-Derived / U.S. Made Dodge Compact Sedan to Debut at 2012 Detroit Show

A new U.S. market compact sedan to be developed by Fiat and built by Chrysler is set to make its debut appearance at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in the beginning of next year, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.
The as-of-yet unnamed model will be badged as Dodge and powered by a Fiat-derived 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. It’ll also do 40 mpg combined, or at least it will if Fiat wants to net itself a further 5% of Chrysler from Mr. Monopoly Uncle Sam.

2009 Fiat Sedici Crossover Facelift Scooped

A member of an Italian Fiat Sedici enthusiast forum has scooped the facelifted version of Fiat's soft-roader ahead of the car's official debut at the forthcoming Geneva Motor Show in March, 2009. The Sedici is the twin brother of the Suzuki SX4 and it is offered in front-wheel and all-wheel drive layouts. The subtly restyled Sedici features a new front grille inspired from Fiat's latest models like the Bravo and Grande Punto as well as a redesigned front bumper. Interior revisions include the restyled instrument panel and the new air-condition controls.

Sources state that apart from the cosmetic enhancements, the Sedici will also benefit from mechanical updates that will include the introduction of new diesel and petrol engines.

Fiat's Grande Punto Production Reaches One-Million Mark

On Tuesday, 24 November, the one millionth Grande Punto rolled off the production lines of the Fiat's Italian factory in Melfi. The commemorative Grande Punto is a Passionate Red Sport version equipped with the Italian firm's 1.4 turbocharged petrol engine that puts out 120HP and it is intended for the British market. The first Grande Punto was launched in 2005 and was the heir of Fiat's two best-sellers, the first Punto from manufactured 1993 to 1999 of which 3.5 million were manufactured, while the second series that was launched in 1999 and is still currently on sale under the name Punto Classic, has exceeded 3 million. The Punto itself had replaced Fiat's iconic Uno supermini.

Yamaha FZ1 Abarth Assetto Corse Concept Bike with 150HP R1 Engine

We don't usually post articles on motorcycles but this time we are obliged to make an exception. The 'naked' Yamaha concept bike you see in the picture above was developed in cooperation with Fiat's sport division, Abarth as part of the celebrations to mark the 100th birthday of the Italian firm's founder Karl Abarth (born on November 15. 1908). The prototype model is based on the FZ1 which is powered by a 1,0-liter engine derived from the Yamaha's R1 supersport bike. The 4-cylinder unit produces an output of 150HP at 11,000 rpm.

The FZ1 Abarth Assetto Corso is distinguished by the classic Abarth livery which combines Abarth's Scorpion and Yamaha's three tuning-fork logo. Mechanical improvements on the concept bike include a new Akrapovic exhaust as well as suspension and brake upgrades.

Along with the FZ1 Abarth Assetto Corso, Fiat's sport division marked Karl Abarth's centenary with the release of a limited edition version of the 500 Abarth (click here for details and photos) and a snazzy high performance desktop powered by the new Intel Core i7 Extreme processor (click here to check it out).

Fiat Abarth Powerplay Extreme: Cool Intel Desktop for Videogamers

If gasoline runs in your veins then you're certainly going to get a kick out of this Abarth branded desktop that was revealed by the firm's parent company Fiat. The "Abarth Powerplay Extreme" is the first fruit of a new collaboration between Fiat's sporty subsidiary and Intel that was begun with the aim of developing state-of-the-art products and electronic devices. The particular high performance desktop with its eye-catching design was produced by Italy's Brain Technology Spa and is powered by the new Intel Core i7 Extreme processor which is supposed to be the most powerful microchip ever produced by Intel.

"The decision to create a product designed for videogamers 'emerged from the realization that this market segment is a rigorous test bench for personal computers. Videogamers are some of the most demanding users, able to assess a computer's real performance and to push it to its highest limits," said Fiat's Abarth division in a statement released to the press.

Abarth and Intel intend to present the high-end desktop all over Europe through the "Intel Friday Night Game", a videogame championship recognized by the Electronic Sports League, in which the best videogamers and teams from over 30 countries compete.

The Italian firm has not announced pricing for the Abarth Powerplay Extreme PC or any details concerning its availability.

Fiat 500 Abarth "DA 0 A 100": Special Edition Version in Memory of Karl Abarth

If there's one thing that there's no shortage of in Turin, that's special edition versions of the 500. Fiat's latest creation is based on the sporty 500 Abarth and it has been built to mark Karl Abarth's centenary. Called the 500 Abarth "DA 0 A 100", this particular version is equipped with a modified 1.4-liter turbocharged engine delivering 160HP and a peak torque of 230 Nm. The commemorative model also features different gear ratios helping it to reach 100 km/h (60mph) from a standing start in 7.3 sec. The "DA 0 A 100's" top speed is 211 km/h or 131mph.

Furthermore, Abarth's engineers improved the 500s stopping power by adding perforated disc brakes front and rear and high performance front brake pads. Other modifications include a new air filter "powered by BMC", special low springs and new 17" alloy wheels – with chrome-plated hub covers and Scorpion logo in relief – complete with Pirelli PZero Nero 205/40 R16 ZR 17 tires.

On the outside, the special edition 500 Abarth stands out for its Nuvolari Grey bodywork complemented by the side stripe with a tone-on-tone effect, the chrome-plated identification badges and wing mirror cases as well as the four (...) exhaust tailpipes.

The interior gets the same kind of treatment with special leather seats in 'hide' color featuring silver stitching. The thumb-rests on the steering wheel (the centre is decorated with the Italian flag) are also covered with hide colored leather, while the gear lever knob, the kick plate branded "da 0 a 100" and the special "da 0 a 100" plate with the number of the car are all aluminum. The same "da 0 a 100" branding can be found on the fuel tank cover, the ignition key fob and the car cover.

Fiat hasn't announced pricing yet but the Italians did reveal that only a total of 101 units will be manufactured.
