TRW’s Retractable Steering Wheel to Help the Elderly and the Obese

Assuming you haven’t been living under a rock for the past ten years, you’ll know that much of the first world’s population is getting both older and fatter. In response to this burgeoning epidemic – which affects nations as diverse as the U.K., U.S.A., Australia and China – TRW Automotive has developed a steering wheel which retracts completely into the dashboard at the touch of a button. Plastic is Fantastic: 1:24 Scale Supercar Exotics Encased In Resin

Here’s something you don’t see every day: a 1970's style resin “sculpture” made by an unknown French artist and featuring various 1:24 scale Ferraris.

There’s also a Lamborghini Diablo, Jaguar XJ220 and Bugatti EB110 in there among others. Props to anyone who can help us identify the rest. The unusual item is being sold by Mantiques Modern [sic] of New York.

For details on price, you’ll have to contact the dealer, but something tells us it won’t be cheap… More photos of the artsy piece in the gallery after the break.

There you HAVEit: VW Renders Drivers (almost) Obsolete

We’ve seen them in science-fiction films: cars that drive themselves. And, as car enthusiasts, we hoped that this invention will never be realized, or at least not in our lifespan. But is seems like Volkswagen and the EU have other plans.

At the final presentation for the HAVEit (Highly Automated Vehicle for Intelligent Transport) project in the Swedish city of Boras, the German car company presented the “Temporary Auto Pilot”, or TAP, a system that allows the car to semi-automatically drive itself up to speeds of 130 km/h (80 mph) on motorways, with the driver simply monitoring the vehicle.

Jeep’s Drive Your Track Lets you Plan World Road Trip from Your Music

I’ve been trying out Jeep’s Drive Your Track website for their Wrangler model’s Infinity Sound System. You start by uploading a song from your hard drive: I chose Gary Numan’s, “Cars” for reasons that should be readily apparent.

It takes a few minutes to load your song, and then the sound waves are somehow mapped to certain geographical features from around the world.

You end up with eight or so places, which for me included the Appalachian Mountains, the Himalayas, the Andes, the Ural Mountains and Colorado Rockies.

Custom Made Nike Air Max inspired by Porsche 911 GT3 RS

These custom made Nikes are the work of a German athletic store called 'Purchaze' and they are supposed to be inspired from the Porsche 911 GT3 RS - or at least in what concerns the color combos (silver, black, green and orange). Other than that, the four pairs of Nike Air Max Light GT3 RS sneakers feature the Porsche logo stitched into the shoes' tongue. Well, the only thing that comes to mind when we see these shoes is the word 'kitsch'...

Portable In-Car Microwave for Nuked Meals on the Move

Over the past years we've seen all sorts of gadgets and appliances finding their ways into our automobiles - some ingenious and handy, other dangerous, useless or simply impractical. In our book, the portable 'In-Car 12V Microwave' from Maplin Electronics that can be plugged into a car's cigarette lighter or connected straight to the battery, fits all categories, depending on the time one chooses to use it. If it's on the move, then it's criminally dangerous and impractical, but if the driver / owner uses the compact microwave to heat up a meal or a coffee during a stop, then it could prove quite useful.

Apple iMo: A Design Proposal for an Autonomous Robotic Car of the Future

No, Steve Jobs has not made the decision to expand Apple's portfolio with cars - at least not yet. Despite the Apple logos, the iMo is an independent study for a future robotic car that was created by Anthony Jannarelly, a French designer with an MA in automotive design at Britain's Coventry University. The extremely compact 2+1 seater with the bubbly design borrows several styling cues from various Apple products. It is fully automated and according to is designer, it's intelligent enough to drive and park all by itself - where's the fun in that?

Other interesting 'pipe-dream' features of the iMo is its ability to change shapes, an idea which we've heard before by BMW and its GINA Roadster Concept -see photo gallery here. The iMo adopts Segway's two-wheel gyroscopic technology and like most futuristic proposals, its fully electric and can be charged through a socket at the rear end of the vehicle.

Mercedes to Equip S-Class with New Split Display Screen

The latest gadget to come out of Mercedes’ Stuttgart headquarters is a new split display screen that allows the driver and front passenger to view two different programmes at the same time. The new technology that is integrated into the control and display system COMAND is called SPLITVIEW and it has been developed by Mercedes-Benz and Bosch. Located centrally on the dashboard console, the screen shows two different images simultaneously by placing pixels adjacent to each other. A filter masking the display divides this mixed image in such a way that depending on the seating position, only the pixels making up one or the other image can be seen. As a result, the driver and front passenger can view different programmes on the same screen at the same time.

For example, while the driver checks out the navigation system the front passenger can watch a film on the very same display. To avoid any distractions to the driver, the passenger has the option of enjoying the programme via headphones. Mercedes-Benz said that the new SPLITVIEW technology will make its premiere in the S-Class (most likely the facelifted model) in the summer of 2009.

What once we could only enjoy through sci-fi movies has now become part of our everyday life. Using Mircosoft's Surface technology BMW has come up with a new way to show off its vehicles to potential customers and at the same time remind them that nowadays, the brand is as much about "The Ultimate Driving Machine" as it is for high-tech gadgetry. Called the "BMW Product Navigator", the touch screen system allows potential BMW buyers to configure their new car in an interactive way. Most Affordable 2010 Mustang Yet by Hot Wheels

2010 Mustang Hot Wheels Toy"Hot" on the heels of last week's world premiere of the 2010 Mustang in LA, Ford announced that in cooperation with Mattel, it will launch the 1/64 Hot Wheels version of its redesigned muscle car. The most affordable 2010 Mustang up to date weighs in at less than a pound and is just short of 3-inches long, compared to the full-size car, which tips the scale at arround 3,500 pounds and measures more than 15 feet in length. Ford said that the toy car is expected to hit retail stores on Dec. 1, 2008. Of course, those of you that have been paying attention to our postings probably remember that the 2010 'Stang Hot Wheels had found its way into the market through eBay well before the presentation of the actual car...

2010 Mustang Hot Wheels Toy"Cars like the Mustang are a natural for Hot Wheels," said Alec Tam, director of Design, Hot Wheels. "We choose cars based on their ability to meet our brand values, which are speed, power, performance and attitude. Mustang hits all four of those points.

"We share Ford's CAD (Computer-Aided Design) data, but we reinterpret it into a format that works for us because there is a lot of extraneous information that we don't necessarily need for a 1/64 model -- like a headlight lens or a door handle or a trim piece," Tam added.

Nissan 200SX Mobile BBQ Trailer

If you happen to have a mullet and a lifeless Nissan 200SX -or any car for that matter- laying around somewhere and you don't know if you should get rid of it or make something useful out of it, here's a 'nifty' idea; how about chopping it in half and transforming it into a mobile BBQ-trailer with an integrated tailgate grill? What an attention grabber...

Tacky Xmas Gifts: Limited Edition Nissan GT-R Toolbox

For the sake of conversation, let's say that someone -after a couple of drinks- finds the limited edition GT-R toolbox from Snap-On attractive and not in bad taste. Now, could someone please explain to us the logic behind the decision to make the toolbox available only to Nissan GT-R owners and only through certified GT-R dealerships when everyone knows that Nissan is exceptionally sensitive when it comes to fiddling around with its 473HP supercar? It doesn't make any sense at all does it...

Volvo to Give Away 10,000 Cars to Thai Toddlers

Christmas may come a little bit earlier this year for underprivileged Thai children as Volvo Car Thailand has announced that in collaboration with Sweden's Viking Toys, it will give away ten thousand toy cars of the XC90, XC70 and C30 models. All 10,000 units of Volvo toy cars will be given to non-governmental organizations and child development organizations under the supervision of government offices. Now, if only Volvo could find a way to hand out another 10,000 real-life vehicles to underprivileged adult drivers...

Mr. Paul Stokes, President of Volvo Car Thailand commented: "When Volvo Cars in Sweden licensed these toys, we saw an obvious route to turn a commercial decision into a way to give a little something back to the youngest members of our society, particularly those from a less affluent background who need every ray of sunshine and every chance to smile. Here at Volvo with the "My First Volvo" project, we want to pass on our support and care to Thai children who really need help across the country."
