Hyundai Releases Sketches of its 2010 Equus Flagship Luxury Sedan

Hyundai has published a set of teaser renderings of its new flagship saloon that will be officially introduced in February, 2009. Codenamed VI, the new luxury sedan will sit atop the Genesis in Hyundai's car range serving as a replacement for the outdated Equus. The VI's design looks pretty aggressive in these pics, but then again all cars look good in teaser sketches...

Unlike the front-wheel drive Equus, the VI will adopt the Genesis' rear-wheel drive architecture as Hyundai wants to make it a more credible competitor against the Lexus LS460, BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Powertrain options will. include a 3.8-liter Lambda V6 engine and a 4.6-liter Tau V8 while a top-of-the-range stretched limousine edition that will bow in the second half of 2009 will feature a 5.0-liter variant of the Tau V8.

Compared to the Equus, the VI will be longer, wider and taller measuring 5,160mm in length, 1,900mm in width and 1,495mm in height. The sedan's highlights will include a second-generation Vehicle Stability Management System (VSM2), a Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) that employs a vision sensor to monitor traffic lane markers and a Pre-Safety Seatbelt System which on detecting an imminent front-end collision, will automatically reel-in the safety belts to maximize the safety of the occupants.

For the time being, Hyundai has no plans to export VI to the North American or European markets.

2010 Subaru Legacy Rendering Based on Official Concept

At next month's 2009 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Subaru will take the covers off the Legacy Concept that essentially previews the shape and styling of the next generation Legacy sedan and station models which are due to arrive in late 2009 and early 2010 in some markets including the U.S.A. Along with the official NAIAS announcement, Subaru issued a teaser picture of the concept revealing the mid-size sedan's front-end styling. The crew over at Japan's Best Car magazine took this photo and created a rendering of what the production version of the 2010 Legacy Sports Tourer (station-wagon) may look like when it is unveiled in 2009.

Even though we've yet to see the concept in full form, we reckon that Best Car's artist impression gives us a pretty accurate view of the 2010 Legacy Sports Tourer, especially in what concerns the car's fascia.

Acura 2+1 Coupe Concept Study: Design Proposal for an Affordable NSX

The new V10-powered NSX may have bitten the dust due to the enduring global economic crisis (click here for details) but that doesn't mean that Honda fans can't continue to dream on. The Acura 2+1 Coupe Concept you see pictured above is a design proposal for a more affordable and down to earth NSX created by Colombian designer Leon Paz during his internship at Honda R&D Americas.

The concept features an aggressive look that adopts what Paz calls, a multi-faceted design language. "The idea was to show very aggressive styling on the body and keep it very simple on the top section with a dynamic roof line flow," Paz explains. One of the most interesting styling elements of the Acura coupe with its 2+1 seating arrangement is the prolonged transparent rooftop that allows a see-through view of the engine compartment.

Apple iMo: A Design Proposal for an Autonomous Robotic Car of the Future

No, Steve Jobs has not made the decision to expand Apple's portfolio with cars - at least not yet. Despite the Apple logos, the iMo is an independent study for a future robotic car that was created by Anthony Jannarelly, a French designer with an MA in automotive design at Britain's Coventry University. The extremely compact 2+1 seater with the bubbly design borrows several styling cues from various Apple products. It is fully automated and according to is designer, it's intelligent enough to drive and park all by itself - where's the fun in that?

Other interesting 'pipe-dream' features of the iMo is its ability to change shapes, an idea which we've heard before by BMW and its GINA Roadster Concept -see photo gallery here. The iMo adopts Segway's two-wheel gyroscopic technology and like most futuristic proposals, its fully electric and can be charged through a socket at the rear end of the vehicle.

Video: Volkswagen Coupe Design Study

The Volkswagen Coupe Concept is a design study created by Daniel Dozza Gerzon for the "Talento Design Volkswagen 2008" competition in Brazil. The concept with the Kia Kee-esque front end and Bugatti-like profile (someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today...) was designed as front-engined two-door coupe capable of accommodating four passengers in a 2+2 seating arrangement. Toyota iQ Convertible: World's Smallest Four-Seater Drop-Top

The creative folks over at Japan's Best Car magazine have come up with what appears to be a computer enhanced image that gives us an idea of what a Toyota iQ Cabriolet could look like if such a version were to be produced. While rumors across the pond make word of a more sporty roadster version of the iQ (see here), Best Car seems to believe that Toyota would most likely go for a more simple approach removing the front and rear parts of the hatchback's rooftop, leaving a center section that would not only act as a safety roll-bar, but also add to the structural integrity of the vehicle.

Since there aren't any other changes, the iQ would probably be able to squeeze in 3 adults and 1 child, making it the world's smallest production four-seater convertible.

Despite the fact that we have no official confirmation that Toyota is indeed planning to introduce a 3+1 convertible variant, we cannot see why the Japanese automaker wouldn't consider the development of a drop-top iQ especially since the minicar is scheduled to make its way into the States as a Scion -read more details here.

2010 Mazda3 Sedan: The Rejected Design Proposals

Rarely do automakers disclose redundant design proposals for a vehicle that has just been introduced to the public like the all-new 2010 Mazda3 Sedan (click here for our high-res image gallery and here for the video). But it appears that Mazda's people are so confident with the outcome that the Japanese company decided to publish a selection of rejected sketches for its new compact sedan that premiered less than a week ago at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show.

If these proposals are indeed the designs that made it to the final round, we reckon that Mazda's execs made the right choice.
