    The thundering sounds of Australia’s V8-powered racecars will soon be heard in the U.S.A. as Texas Governor Rick Perry and Queensland Premier Anna Bligh, announced today a five-year agreement to bring the famed Australian V8 Supercar series to the new Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas beginning in 2013.

    "The addition of V8 Supercars into our lineup at Circuit of The Americas will add to what we already know will be a rich and exhilarating fan experience," said Steve Sexton, President of Circuit of The Americas.

Holden Commodore Hybrid to be Introduced by 2010

    GM’s Australian subsidiary Holden is planning to launch a new hybrid version of the locally produced and developed Commodore according to General Motors Goup vice president Nick Reilly, who broke the news speaking at a quarterly strategy meeting from Holden’s Melbourne offices.

    “We will introduce hybrids in the next couple of years,” said General Motors group vice president Nick Reilly. When he was asked by journalists on whether the Commodore would be one of them, he said: “That could be one of the first hybrids you could see (in Australia from GM). I would put a time frame on that of probably a couple of years.”

    As you already know, the Pontiac G8 sedans are basically rebadged versions of the Commodore that are shipped to the US from Australia, meaning that the North American market will probably also see hybrid variants of the G8. -Continued

    According to the drive.com.au website, Reilly also unveiled to reporters that a diesel-powered Commodore is also in the company’s product pipeline. “We don’t yet have a diesel Commodore but that will come,” he says. GM’s VP also confirmed that a four-cylinder Commodore was being looked at without however giving out any details on whether that unit will be GM’s 2.0-liter turbocharged unit found in the Pontiac Solstice, the Opel GT and elsewhere.

HSV Announces Clubsport R8 Tourer with 425Hp LS3 V8

    Holden’s specialty vehicles unit – aka HSV, announced today that it will be adding a station-wagon version of the Commodore to its high-performance model line-up. Dubbed HSV Tourer, the supped up Commodore VE Sportwagon will go on sale with specifications similar to the ClubSport R8. Holden Commodore 60th Anniversary Editions

    Continuing its "special edition" marketing attack, Holden released details on the Commodore VE 60th Anniversary that will be available in two flavors, the Omega and the sport SS V. Holden Special Vehicles Reveals Commodore W427 with +496Hp LS7 V8

    The muscle-car party in Australia just keeps going on and on; HSV or Holden Special Vehicles, unwrapped the LS7 V8 powered W427 Commodore at the Melbourne Motor Show. While power output figures are still to be confirmed, the W427’s 7.0-liter or 427 c.i. V8 engine is likely to produce in excess of 496 Hp and 640 Nm or 472 lb/ft of torque.

    HSV Managing Director, Scott Grant, said: “The W427 will be quite possibly the fastest road registrable Supercar ever produced in Australia and among the quickest anywhere around the world. The W427 will only be produced in limited numbers and we want to reflect that exclusivity in how we connect with our Supercar customers”.

    Styling and design highlights of the W427 include an all new front fascia, a three piece carbon fibre rear spoiler, 20 inch machined faced alloy wheel, unique exhaust tips and red leather interior. The W427 is scheduled to enter production in the middle of the year and will be available for sale in dealerships in the third quarter of 2008. –Details and pics after the jump

Holden Unveils Production Commodore Sportwagon at Melbourne Show

    The production version of Holden’s all new VE Commodore Sportwagon was unveiled today at the Melbourne Motor Show. The stylish rear-wheel-drive station will be available in the full range of VE Commodore variants including Omega, Berlina and Calais, plus the sporty SV6, SS and the range topping SS V and Calais V models. Engine options start from the base 241 Hp 3.6-liter V6 unit and top with the 362 Hp 6.0-liter V8.     GM Holden released pricing for the all-new VE Sportwagon at the Melbourne International Motor Show today, adding great value to its list of attractive features.

    The 2008 VE Sportwagon range starts from as little as $37,790 # for Omega, with each of the seven models only $1,000 more than their VE sedan equivalent.

    At $41,290 #, the new VE Sportwagon Berlina is an amazing $5,600 less than its VZ wagon equivalent whilst offering a range of engineering advances and safety features including Electronic Stability Program (ESP ® ) , Rear Park Assist and six airbags which are standard across the range.

    Having more than doubled the model range from three in VZ to seven in VE, the new Sportwagon offers buyers more choice and more features to further enhance its appeal to both private and business customers.

    GM Holden’s Executive Director of Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, Alan Batey, said value and choice would be key features that would attract buyers to the new VE Sportwagon.

Holden Coupe 60: Commodore Based Concept Previews Monaro

    GM’s Australian subsidiary Holden, surprised us today at the Melbourne Show opening with the unveiling of the deliciously sexy Coupe 60 concept car that was created to celebrate the six decades since Holden built the 48-215 model. Although the Coupe 60 is based on the VE Commodore sedan retaining the same wheelbase length, it’s almost 60mm shorter. Combine that with the beefy bodykit and the lower roofline and it's not difficult to see why the rear-wheel-drive coupe looks so good.

    The Coupe 60 is equipped with a 6.0L V8 engine with Active Fuel Management, calibrated for E85 Ethanol fuel and it's matted to a 6-speed manual transmission. So, could the concept be previewing a successor to the Monaro coupe? Well, according to Holden’s Chairman and Managing Director Mark Reuss, although many people would love seeing it going into production, he noted that for the moment, it has to remain a concept only.     GM Holden today marked the diamond anniversary of its first all Australian car by unveiling a stunning two-door performance thoroughbred called Coupe 60.

    Coupe 60 celebrates the six decades since GM Holden built the 48-215 at its Fishermans Bend plant in Port Melbourne, Victoria, and provides a glimpse of Holden’s future directions in design, engineering and emerging engine technologies.

    Exemplifying sports luxury, Coupe 60 is a pillarless concept car that explores the limits of Holden’s current rear-wheel drive capabilities, combining racing looks and technology into a road going sportscar experience.

    Its sophisticated appearance is delivered through simple and powerful design, highlighted by the pillarless construction and V8 supercar inspired cockpit layout and side-exiting chambered exhaust system with billet alloy tips.

    Almost 60mm shorter than the VE sedan, and sitting on 21-inch centre-lock alloy wheels with unique design Kumho high performance semi-slick tyres, Coupe 60 captures all that’s exciting about the Holden DNA.

    Other racing-derived enhancements include full flat under body, rear underbody air diffuser and functional rear deck-lid spoiler with unique designed LED tail lamps.

    The interior also has several unique features. They include one piece carbon fiber bucket seats (featuring leather and suede pad design) and a sports-inspired flat bottomed steering wheel with integrated shift light display and LCD sports instrument cluster.

    The high gloss carbon fiber carries through to doors and rear trim providing a contrast to the leather trimmed instrument panel and black suede trimmed pillars, headliners and parcel shelf.

    Details and accents are picked out with a distinctive red high shine leather on the seats and dark gunmetal finish and satin chrome on the consoles and doors.

    Front seats are adjustable fore and aft to allow easy access to the rear, with four-point race harness restraints for all seating positions.

    Under the bonnet is just as forward looking, with a 6.0 litre V8 engine incorporating the latest technologies such as active fuel management and calibrated for E85 ethanol fuel.

    Even the paint is a one-off. Called ‘Diamond Silver’ by Holden designers, it gives a liquid aluminium finish that almost slides off the bodywork.

    GM Holden Chairman and Managing Director Mark Reuss said, “Coupe 60 is Holden's 60th anniversary gift to its fans worldwide.

    “It highlights Holden’s heritage of rear wheel drive performance whilst looking ahead to the potential offered by new technologies and materials.

    “This is a vehicle I know our designers would dearly love to see go into production, but for the moment it has to remain a concept only,” he said.

    Project Designer Manager, Peter Hughes, said, “We were looking to mark the diamond anniversary with a car that captured the Holden DNA and took the current VE range to an exciting next step.

    “Even in the early stages of VE development, we knew there was a sensational coupe waiting to get out and the 60 th anniversary has given us the chance to explore that.

    “With Coupe 60 we think we have designed a car that has the potential to write another chapter in the book of Holden icons.”
