Of course, it would be somewhat unfair to Holden if we didn’t mention that it has played a key role in the development and design of several GM products including the 5-door Cruze that will be show in pre-production trim at the 2011 Australian International Motor Show (AIMS), which takes place in Melbourne from July to 10.

According to the seller, this was the fifth Bullet Roadster built and the first V8-engined one to roll out of the company’s then new Chinderah, NSW factory. It’s all hearsay, of course, but I’m willing to believe the words of a 62yo motoring enthusiast with arthritic knees. So here goes...
Bullet No. 5 was a special order from a man named George Covacic who supplied a 4.6-liter all-alloy, fuel injected V8 crate motor along with a Tremac 5-speed manual transmission and the differential from a Holden Commodore SS. Like all Bullet supercars, the brakes and suspension came from the Mazda RX-7.

The WMC Group secured the rights to distribute the Foton range of 4x2 and 4x4 utility vehicles with plans for the first vehicles to go on sale in Australia early next year. The Sydney based distributor said Australian Design Rule compliance and testing is currently underway and is due to be finalized within the next two months.

Power for the FWD CX-9 continues to be provided by a 3.7-liter V6 engine producing 204kW (274HP) and 367Nm, mated to a 6-speed Activematic transmission. As you would expect, the FWD version is a tad more fuel efficient than the AWD model returning 11.0 lt/100km instead of 11.2lt/100km.

In an Australian media first, Honda has installed a series of massive 'hybrid' billboards that are illuminated by solar power and backed up by 'green' energy electric (hence the somewhat misleading 'hybrid' title), for its new Honda Accord Euro. In cooperation with outdoor advertising specialists, APN Outdoor, Honda has installed the solar panels on several of its Accord billboards around the country. "Honda's well-earned reputation for minimising its environmental impact made this opportunity very attractive," said Honda Australia Marketing Manager, John Pranger. "Our goal is to leave blue skies for our kids and harnessing natural energy sources goes a long way to achieve this."
Even if you tried, we doubt that you could do what Pauline Grodski from Melbourne, Australia, did with her Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Ms Grodski reportedly lost control of her luxury sedan near her home in Malvern as she was... reaching for her lunchbox. As you can see in the picture above, Ms Grodski's carelessness -and that's an understatement- ended with her car hovering on two wheels astride a neighbor's parked Holden Astra sedan. The official teaser sketch you see above gives us our first glimpse of Holden's upcoming, Australian built compact car that will available in late 2010 in both four-door sedan and hatchback versions. The yet unnamed compact model will be based on GM's global Delta small car architecture that underpins the Chevy Cruze as well as the next-generation Opel / Vauxhall / Saturn Astra. It will be GM Holden's first locally produced car beyond the Commodore (sold in the States as the Pontiac G8) since the demise of the Vectra production in 1998.Local design and engineering work on the Australian vehicle will take place at GM Holden's Port Melbourne headquarters in the State of Victoria. The front-wheel drive model will be offered with an array of 4-cylinder direct injected petrol and diesel engines while Holden said that it is also considering a range of alternative fuel or fuel saving technologies including E85, LPG, CNG and start-stop hybrid capability.
Further details about the compact model including its nameplate, design specifications and pricing will be revealed at a later date.
Production of Holden's second carline at the firm's Elizabeth manufacturing facility in South Australia will start in the third quarter of 2010 with support from the Federal and South Australian Governments. According to GM's Australian subsidiary, the program will require 500 to 600 existing employees at Elizabeth and is estimated to provide 500 to 600 local supplier positions.
GM Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Mark Reuss said the announcement provided opportunity to take a leading role in developing alternative fuel and fuel saving technologies in Australia for Australians. Mr Reuss said the program would be a major contributor to the economy, generating an estimated $70 million to $80 million in wages and $30 million in research and development.
"Together with Government, we are extending the scope and consumer appeal of our local manufacturing efforts," Mr Reuss said. "We have been building Holden cars to suit the needs of Australian motorists for 60 years. These plans build on that tradition. We recognise the needs and desires of motorists are evolving with growing concern around environmental factors and shifting consumer sentiment."
"Just as our leading Commodore range will continue to undergo technological development, this new vehicle will cater for growing demand for smaller cars focussed on economy," Mr Reuss added.
The latest victim of the global economic downturn is Australia's 2009 Brisbane International Auto Show which has been canceled after a series of automakers and distributors pulled out citing financial difficulties. Organizer Chris Beecham told the Australian Broadcasting Corp (ABC) that the show was no longer financially viable. "Unfortunately the world economy has turned against us and we've had to pull the pin," said Beecham. "Every single car manufacturer has a head office overseas and they're all looking at ways to save money and unfortunately we don't control those budgets," he added.Financial difficulties aside, another factor that seems to have played a significant role in the automakers decision is that the 2009 Brisbane International Auto Show -scheduled for February 6 to 15- coincided with the 2009 Melbourne International Auto Show that kicks off on the 27th February 2009.
Like they say, there's nothing like the original. However, if you want our opinion, in the case of the Holden Commodore we prefer the twin nostril fascia of its Americanized sibling, the Pontiac G8. The HSV GTS is another story as Holden's officially designated performance division has done wonders on the Commodore's appearance. Either way, if you happen to own a Pontiac G8 and dig the original look of its 'down-under' comrade or the kick-ass sporty looks of the HSV model, an Australian company called JHP Vehicle Enhancements will ship you a complete kit to perform the conversion.
