The Ditch: Can You Guess How Many Rally Cars will Make it Through?

An evil…ditch was just waiting to claim a victim at the Rally Finland - or so the Youtube poster claims that this is where the following incident(s) took place.

Watching the first few rally cars pass through or rather drive into and out of the ditch on the side of the road it becomes clear that it’s not a case of if, but when we’ll see a car taking a plunge. Enjoy the clip after the jump.

BMW Creates New Performance Edition models to Celebrate Sponsorship of 2012 London Olympics

BMW 357Ci: E46 Coupe gets Pontiac GTO 5.7-liter LS1 V8

Two observations: one, there’s nothing cooler than a LS1-engined BMW that is externally indistinguishable from its bread-and-butter cousins and two, the Apple iPhone is probably the worst thing for filming a movie ever. A little less of number two and a little more number one, if you please.

This BMW E46 3-Series coupe, or as its UK owner has appropriately named it, the 357Ci, started its life as a 2001 325Ci with an M Sport Package.

In the hands of its current owner, it received the same 5.7-liter LS1 V8 engine as the rather forlorn looking Porsche 911 we wrote about last week, making this the second American-powered German automobile we’ve featured in as many days.

SPIED: 2012 BMW 3-Series Sedan Starts Taking Shape

The new, sixth generation of BMW’s 3-Series sedan, codenamed F30 is almost upon us and as a result, we’re seeing more and more prototype models with less camouflage making their appearance on the road or in this case, testing on the Nürburgring circuit in Germany.

Being that the 3-Series has been the backbone of BMW’s success over the years, it doesn’t come to much of a surprise that the F30 remains close to the current model in terms of design.

New Exclusive and M Sport Editions Join BMW 3-Series Coupe and Convertible Range

BMW Rumored to Rename New 1- and 3-Series Coupes into 2- and 4-Series. What Do You Say?

Citing unnamed sources from within the brand, Britain’s Car Magazine reported on Tuesday that BMW is seriously entertaining the idea of renaming the next generation of its two-door 1- and 3-Series models into the 2- and 4-Series respectively.

The new badges would be applied on the two-door coupe and convertible as well as the sportier GT fastback models of the future 1- and 3-Series lineup.

As some of you may recall, this is not the first time that BMW has toyed around with the thought of turning the 3-Series coupe and convertible into the 4-Series, with the Bavarian company coming very close to executing the idea in the beginning of the new millennium.

BMW 3-Series Sport Sedan Concept

Here’s yet another design proposal from an independent artist who wishes to capture our imagination. The BMW 3-Series Sport Sedan Concept is the work of Benedetto Bordone who graduated from Coventry University in 2005 and is currently a freelance Designer/Illustrator. The artist’s previous working experiences include BeeStudio Torino, Centro Stile Alfa Romeo and Honda Advanced Design.

With this proposal, Bordone wanted to explore a possible future design language for the Bavarian brand, and in particular for its core model, the ultra successful 3-Series sedan. "The car's surfaces are inspired by the torso of an athlete, to give an impression of lean muscle. The detailing of the grilles communicates precision and attention to details,” said Berdone. Our opinion? Overall, the design is a bit too complicated for our taste and we think that the front-end styling needs to be reworked from the beginning. -Continued

Mystery BMW 3-Series Test Mule Spotted in Germany

This elevated 3-Series prototype with the weird front-end is supposed to be a test-mule for a forthcoming BMW compact crossover codenamed F3. Could be, but then again, maybe BMW is testing the next generation X3’s or even the forthcoming X1’s mechanics on a 3-Series model. Unless someone spoke to the guys that were behind the wheel –which we doubt, there’s no way of knowing with certainty what type of model is being tested in these scoop pictures. -More pics after the jump

$40k Buyers: Dodge Challenger SRT8 or BMW 335i Coupe?

A couple of weekends ago we asked you to tell us if you had about $20k+, what would you buy; a base Dodge Challenger SE V6 or a VW Golf GTi – see here. To be blunt, neither of those models have that something special. The Challenger that we all openly want is of course the top-end SRT8 with its 425 Hp 6.1-liter HEMI V8

However, at about $38k, it’s just a mere $2k cheaper from one of the best RWD 4seater-coupes in the market; the BMW 335i Coupe with its high-tech, twin-turbocharged six-cylinder unit. At a first glance, the bimmer’s 305 Hp straight-six seems no match for the HEMI’s 425 Hp.

And truth is, that according to the manufacturers’ official data, the SRT8 is manages to beat the 335i in the zero to 60 MPH sprint by nearly half a second (SRT8: 4.9 sec vs 335i: 5.3 sec). On the other hand, Motortrend managed to lower the 335i’s 0-60 time to just 5.1 sec while C&D did even better with just 4.9 sec (the SRT8 hasn’t been tested yet). So having said that, where would your $40k go: the retro-styled V8 American muscle car or the sleek, high-tech German GT? Have your say at the comment section.

Geneva Preview: BMW Debuts 1 & 3-Series Performance Accessories

If you happened to like the 1-Series Coupe tii concept (Pics here, Video here) that was previewed at the 2007 Tokyo Motorshow in 2007, BMW is offering you the chance to turn your Coupe into a tii-spec version through its new range of driving-oriented aftermarket accessories. To be launched in Geneva next month, the BMW Performance products will be offered for both 1 and 3 Series models. The range includes upgrades to the engine, braking system, suspension and alloy wheels, as well as interior and exterior enhancements. -Details and pics after the jump

    PRESS RELEASE:

The new BMW Performance range of sporting enhancements

Range unveiled at Geneva Motorshow to add further dynamic credentials to, and personalisation for, BMW 1 and 3 Series cars

Building on the success of BMW's M cars and M Sport models, BMW is launching BMW Performance, a new range of driving-oriented aftermarket accessories. Designed to focus purely on the driving experience, the range of individual retrofit components includes upgrades to the engine, braking system, suspension and alloy wheels, as well as interior and exterior enhancements, all for BMW 1 and 3 Series cars.

The BMW Performance products were showcased on the recent BMW 1 Series Concept tii concept car at the Tokyo Motorshow in 2007.

Carl Whipp, BMW UK's Aftersales Marketing Manager, said: "BMW has had unprecedented success with M models in the UK. To that end, BMW UK is the second largest market for M cars in the world. In addition, we have the M Sport range of cars in almost every model series. The launch of BMW Performance offers existing owners another tier of dynamic, driving-focussed products, this time on a retrofit basis."

The BMW Performance components are designed to be installed on BMW 1 and 3 Series models and the majority of the parts will fit either M Sport or SE models. Rather than the BMW Performance offering a complete car, like BMW M does, we expect customers to mix-and-match the elements of the range that are most important to them.

    Sporting and agile engineering
The strength of BMW Performance is the depth of its engineering. To deliver improvements in engine performance, owners of six-cylinder 1 and 3 Series models can specify a BMW Performance carbon fibre air intake system. This system offers improved air flow and additional engine air supply. It also delivers a particularly sporting induction note for those who appreciate the unique sound of a BMW straight-six. Customers can also opt for the BMW Performance sports exhaust system that enhances gas flow from the engine to improve efficiency. It, too, is designed to improve the acoustic experience without compromising comfort on long-distance journeys.

A BMW Performance sports braking package for enhanced stopping power can be specified. Featuring 17-inch cross-drilled and vented brake discs on the front axle as well as motorsport-derived six-piston fixed callipers, finished in BMW Performance yellow, the package sharpens braking response as well as cutting braking distances.

Those drivers wanting to enhance the agility of their cars will select BMW Performance suspension. Delivering even better handling and driving dynamics than the standard's car, the BMW Performance suspension package comprises recalibrated shock absorbers and coil springs. It also lowers the ride height of the car by 10mm to reduce the centre of gravity, thus delivering even more nimble handling. Cars equipped with BMW Performance suspension can be identified by their yellow coil springs. A BMW Performance carbon fibre front suspension strut brace that adds torsional rigidity to the front of the car can also be selected.

Finally, a unique BMW Performance alloy wheel is available. The double-spoke lightweight alloy wheel is available measuring 18- or 19-inches, dependent on the model.

    Dynamic styling
Exterior body styling is the most obvious visual definition of the BMW Performance range. Offering a unique package of aerodynamically-enhanced styling components for 1 Series models, the kit comprises a new front spoiler with fully integrated black high-gloss kidney grille surround as well as sculpted and contoured side sills.

Model-specific exterior carbon fibre accessories are also available. BMW 1 Series owners can opt for carbon fibre exterior door mirrors. Alternatively, 1 and 3 Series drivers can select the new BMW Performance carbon fibre rear spoiler or carbon rear diffuser to enhance the appearance of the car as well as the aerodynamics.

    Sporting, lightweight interior components
The BMW Performance philosophy reaches into the interior of the car too. Using motorsport technologies and design, BMW Performance sports seats are offered. With bucket seat contours and black Alcantara covering, these sports seats offer the highest levels of lateral support. To ensure continued driver and passenger safety, the car's side airbags are incorporated into the seat. The seats are available on all 1 and 3 Series models except Convertible cars.

The BMW Performance short-shift gear lever will appeal to those drivers who appreciate a particularly dynamic driving experience. The short shift gear lever shortens the gear lever travel by 25 per cent to deliver the fastest possible manual gear change.

Taking its steer from the world of motorsport, the BMW Performance multi-function sports steering wheel provides information directly into the driver's line of sight. Thanks to a small LED display in the upper section of the wheel, the driver is kept abreast of information such as oil and coolant temperature, lateral and forward acceleration rates and ideal gear shift points. The multi-function buttons on the steering wheel enable the driver to scroll through the available information.

Finally, to complement the motorsport-derived interior equipment, owners can specify BMW Performance carbon fibre interior components. Weight-saving carbon fibre components for the dashboard, front and rear door panels and centre console are available. Customers can also specify foot pedals and a footrest made from lightweight aluminium.

2009 BMW M3 Cabriolet Pictures Leaked On The Net!

While we where busy hunting down the Detroit Show premiers, our fellow Dutch bloggers from Autoblog.nl discovered a series of official images featuring the upcoming 2009 BMW M3 Cabriolet. We’re not certain yet whether BMW intends to show the drop-top M3 in Detroit or if the car’s debut is set for the Geneva Motorshow in two months time, but we’ll know until tomorrow.

For the time being, we know that it’s equipped with the same 420 HP 4.0-liter V8 engine as the Coupe and Sedan M3s and that according to initial information, due to the extra weight of the retractable roof and the additional strengthening of the chassis, it’s accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62 MPH) in 5.3 seconds, 0.4 seconds slower than the M3 Coupe. There are also unverified reports that the M3 Cabriolet will debut BMW’s first ever 7-speed double-clutch transmission dubbed as the “M DKG”, but better wait for an official release before we jump to any conclusions. -Continued
