Red is the color of choice for Audi's new wallpaper gallery of the just released, top-of-the-line R8 V10 5.2 FSI. Set to go on sale during the second quarter of 2009, the most powerful version of Audi's mid-engined supercar is equipped with a Lamborghini Gallardo derived, 5.2-liter V10 engine that pumps out 525HP and 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque. Audi is aiming towards Lamborghini territory with the presentation of a top-of-the-line R8 model that's equipped with what else, but the Gallardo's 5.2-liter FSI engine. Just to keep the family balance, in the R8 the V10 powerhouse churns out 525HP at 8,000 rpm and 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque at 6,500 rpm in European-spec form. That's compared to the latest Gallardo LP560-4's 560HP. According to the German firm, the R8 V10's mid-engine design provides an ideal axle load distribution of 44 to 56 percent.When equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, the R8 5.2 FSI quattro goes from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 3.9 seconds. In the version with the sequentially shifting R tronic it reaches 200 km/h (124.27 mph) in another 8.1 seconds. As for the car's top speed, the R8 5.2 FSI won't stop until it reaches 316 km/h (196 mph). Not that any potential buyers will actually care, but the R8 V10 with R tronic gets by on an average of 13.7 liters per 100 km (17.17 US mpg).
The car comes equipped with Audi's magnetic ride system which adapts the characteristics of the suspension in milliseconds to the nature of the road surface and to the driving style as standard. Deceleration is provided by eight brake pistons at the front and four at the rear grasp the brake disks, which are ventilated and perforated. The brake disks on the front axle have a diameter of 380 millimeters (15 in); the rear discs span 356 millimeters (14 in). Optionally, there's also a ceramic brake system available.
On the outside, the R8 V10 is distinguished by a few subtle styling changes such as the chrome finish grille, the all-LED headlights, the new rear bumper that incorporates a different diffuser and two large exhaust pipes, and the 10-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels. Tire sizes are 235/35 front and 295/30 rear. Other unique details include the accentuated sideblades and the matt aluminum exhaust grilles at the rear windows.
The Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro will be rolled out in Germany in the second quarter of 2009 at a basic price of €142,400 or with the current exchange rates, $183,700.
A Dutch website has pulled away the blanket of secrecy surrounding the forthcoming Audi R8 V10 by letting out the first official images and initial specifications. The range-topping R8 will most likely be revealed at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2009. According to the 'leakers', the R8 V10 is equipped with a detuned version of the Lamborghini's 5.2-liter V10 engine pumping out a sweet 525HP. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) is said to come in 3.9 sec while the mid-engined sportscar can achieve a top speed of 315 km/h (196 mph).The R8 V10 gets the usual cosmetic upgrades that we see on Audi's "S" and "R" models like the chromed grille stripes, the aluminum mirror caps, new alloy wheel designs and a restyled rear bumper that incorporates two exhaust pipes instead of four like the R8 4.2-liter V8. Inside, the only visible difference between the V8 and the V10 R8 seems to concern the blacked-out gauges of the instrument panel. The GT3 race version of the Audi R8 called LMS made its first public appearance at this week's Essen Motorshow in Germany. Audi's first-ever racing sports car that has been developed specifically for customer use will available from autumn 2009 for a proposed price of €262,000 (plus tax) which comes to around $332,000 U.S. with the current exchange rates. The Audi R8 LMS is powered by a mid-mounted 500HP plus V10 engine hooked up to a newly developed six-speed sequential sports gearbox. Given that the GT3 regulations prohibit the use of four-wheel drive, Audi's race-spec supercar comes with a rear-wheel-drive powertrain.The new Audi R8 LMS will be seen in action on the race track during the 2009 season with up to eight customer cars competing in different European race series and in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, for which Audi Sport will develop an endurance version of the R8 LMS. The German automaker itself does not plan to enter any races with the new GT3 car.
German automaker Audi, announced today that it will stage the world premiere of the motorsport version of the R8 at the Essen Motor Show that runs from November 28 to December 7. The 500HP-plus, rear-wheel-drive Audi R8 GT3 is destined for track use in various national and international race series around the world. Power will be transmitted to the rear wheels through a newly developed six-speed sequential sports gearbox while the R8 GT3's suspension will mostly use components from the production model. For those interested, the R8 GT3 will be available for order from autumn 2009.
The thing about replicas is that most of the times you're more impressed with the effort that went into building one than with the overall result. But in the case of the Audi R8 replica that was made out of a European 2001 Ford Cougar 2.5 V6 by Alberto Gavach Fuertes from Zaragoza, Spain, we must admit that we're equally amazed with the outcome. For those that are swift to criticize, bear in mind that Alberto managed to approximate the looks and proportions of a mid-engined sportscar using a front-engined, front-wheel drive coupe.
Sure many will find that some exterior details are either wrongly presented (front spoiler) or missing (tailpipes), or even that the interior of the car, with the exception of the unnecessary 'R8' badge on the steering wheel, is all stock, but you have to hand it to this guy for doing a spectacular job.
If you happened to like it then you'll be pleased to learn that Alberto has put the Audi R8 'replicon' up for sale on his personal site. But here's the catch: he's asking a hefty €40,000 (or $50,100 with the current exchange rates) for the car. Now, we're no used-car or replica experts and even though we lift our hat to Alberto, we find the asking price a tad overboard. True, the real Audi R8 will set you back €121,000 in Spain, but on the other hand, €35,000 will buy you a brand-new TT 2.0TFSI Coupe in the same country. What would you prefer?
And for those of you wondering, the European Ford Cougar Coupe and the U.S. market Mercury Cougar Coupe sold from 1999 to 2002 are one and the same. And neither was a success in its home market, partly due to the coupe's somewhat controversial -slash bland- 'New Edge' styling.
