Confirming earlier reports, Ford made it official that the N.American Fiesta will be manufactured at the company’s revised Cuautitlán Assembly Plant in Mexico in early 2010. Moreover, Ford announced that aside from the sedan version of the Fiesta, the European hatchback model will also be added to the U.S. lineup. “We’re looking at every aspect of what’s defined Ford as a small-car leader in Europe and working to build on this expertise in driving dynamics and design across a global family of Ford cars that are as exciting to drive as they are to look at,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s VP of Global Product Development.
Ford’s new multi-plant in Mexico represents a $3 billion U.S. investment including the support of local suppliers. It's Mexico’s largest ever automotive investment and it’s expected to create around 4,500 Ford jobs. Together with all direct and indirect employment at suppliers, the moves affect 30,000 jobs in Mexico. Nice, but can't help wondering what the 10 - 12% of Ford’s U.S. workforce that will be forced to quit this summer have to say about this one…
