Subaru’s parent company Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI) today announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Tan Chong Group for the local production of an unnamed compact SUV in Malaysia.

Breaking: Subaru Withdraws from World Rally Championship

It's a sad day for rally fans like ourselves today as Subaru has announced its decision to withdraw from the World Rally Championship at the end of the year because of the financial crisis. "This sudden decision was made in response to the widespread economic downturn that is affecting the entire automotive industry," Subaru said in a statement. The announcement comes only a day after Suzuki said that it won't compete in the 2009 WRC for the same exact reasons.

The Prodrive-run Subaru team was one of the biggest players in the WRC the past two decades during which it won six World Rally Championship titles. Commenting on Subaru's decision, Prodrive chairman, David Richards, said: "Subaru's departure from the World Rally Championship is a great loss as it is one of the sport's icons. The Subaru World Rally Team has created true champions such as Colin McRae and Richard Burns and its absence will be felt by many the world over. Although this decision closes a significant chapter in Prodrive's history, our focus now turns to the future."

SEMA: 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX SPT with 275HP

2009 Subaru Impreza WRX SPT SEMA 2008Using parts from its in-house Subaru Genuine Accessory and SPT (Subaru Performance Tuning) catalogs, Subaru created a custom version of its recently updated 2009 Impreza WRX 5-door. Since the latest iteration of the WRX already comes with a standard factory Aero Body Kit, the Japanese automaker limited the external modifications to a front lip spoiler by STI, fog light protectors and a broken-pixel paint finish.

The more-road-hugging stance of the SEMA show car is achieved by the addition of STI performance springs and Botticelli III 19-inch wheels by OZ Racing. A lower chassis brace and strut tower brace from the SPT catalog complete the chassis mods.

The 2009 WRX's 2.5-liter intercooled turbo Boxer engine that develops in standard form 265HP with 244 lb.-ft. of torque has been enhanced with a SPT cat-back exhaust that gives a slight bump to 275 hp and 250 lb.-ft of torque. Finally, Subaru also added an STI short-throw shifter while the under-hood area gets a visual boost with an SPT oil cap, turbo heat shield and battery hold-down.

Rear-Wheel Drive Subaru Impreza Coupe– Official Sketch!

The sporty coupe you see in the sketch above was revealed by an inside Subaru source to the good old folks from Autocar mag and it depicts the Japanese carmaker’s forthcoming rear-wheel drive coupe that is being co-developed with Toyota who as you may already know, holds an 8 percent stake in Subaru.

According to the magazine’s sources, the two Japanese automakers are working on a rear-wheel drive coupe project based on the underpinnings of the Impreza. Despite the fact that the Subaru and Toyota variants of the RWD Coupe will differ in appearance, they will both be powered by Subaru’s 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Boxer engines available in naturally aspirated and turbo versions.

Even though Subaru and Toyota’s prime objective is to create a nimble, lightweight RWD coupe, the possibility of a top-notch AWD version should not be ruled out. Sources have stated that the final design of Subaru’s version of the RWD Coupe is due to be signed off in July, with production set to start sometime in 2010.

Oregon-based Perrin Performance has built and tuned many Subaru models over the past years. Their latest project is based on the 2008 Impreza WRX and it features a number of improvements that focus on all aspects of performance. Additional improvements include a new exhaust system, modified Perrin fuel injectors and a Hydra engine management unit. According to Perrin Performance, the supped up boxer unit now develops a hefty 385 Hp and and 389.4lb-ft of torque. The tuning firm also upgraded the suspension by swapping the WRX's stock front anti-roll bar and end links, as well as control arm bushings with ones from the Legacy 2.5 GT while the car also features a H&R coilover kit. 77-Year-Old Scooby Fan Buys His 6th Sporty Subaru

There’s a good possibility that 77-year-old Ron Billingham from the UK could be Subaru’s oldest and most loyal Impreza turbo fan. But even if it is proven that Ron doesn’t hold that title, we have to give him props for maintain his youthful spirit when it comes to buying cars even though he’s only a few steps away from his 80th birthday. Just a few days ago, Ron became one the first new owners in the UK of the 2008 Impreza WRX STI that packs a 300 Hp ‘boxer’ engine giving a theoretical 155 mph top speed and 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds.

Ron has previously owned six sporty Subaru’s, including limited edition Imprezas such as the ‘WR1’ and last year’s ‘RB320’ in memory of the late rally ace Richard Burns. Other favourites include both 2.0 and 2.5 litre versions of the Impreza WRX – complete with Prodrive Performance Packs and a Legacy 3.0 litre spec.B Sports Tourer. -Continued

The retired Managing Director of a furniture design and installation company who has also owned Mercedes-Benz and Porsches said: “I’m no boy racer, mind, but have been in the past. The new STI is so much smoother-riding and refined but still goes when you want it to. Your mum could drive it to the shops with no problems yet when you select ‘Super Sharp’ mode it’s like lighting the afterburner.”

Subaru Thinking About a Diesel-Powered Impreza WRX

Having already presented its new 2.0-liter diesel boxer engine in the Legacy Sedan & Outback models, Subaru seems to be looking into developing a more powerful version of the oil-burning motor for the Impreza that will wear the WRX badge. According to Brit magazine Autocar, the information came from an unnamed Subaru senior brand manager. While the standard turbo diesel engine pumps out 150 Hp, the high-output version of the motor is said to deliver around 200 Hp which logically, will be enough to justify the WRX nametag.
