2008 MINI Clubman: Official Images Break Loose!

The first images of MINI’s 2008 Clubman have found their way into the net, two months prior to the car’s public debut at the Frankfurt Show in September. We don’t have the press release in our hands yet, but the four pictures of the Clubman speak for themselves. Maintaining several of the characteristics seen in MINI’s “Traveller” concepts like the spilt rear doors, the Clubman is based on stretched platform architecture from the new MINI range.

The most notable feature of the Clubman -apart from the extended wheelbase which will significantly open up cabin space, is the clamshell side door on the passenger’s side. The reverse-opening door promises to offer easier access to the expanded second row seats. Style-wise, the Clubman has a redesigned rear-end featuring plastic add-ons on the C-pillar. However, what really caught our attention here were the twin-wipers on the split-door; a detail that makes you love those meticulous Bavarian engineers.

As for the engine range, the Clubman is expected to be offered with the same units as the hatch minus the base 95Hp 1.4. Thus meaning, we’ll have the Cooper with the 120Hp 1.6-litre petrol engine, the Cooper S with the 175Hp Turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol unit and finally a diesel version fitted with a 110Hp 1.6-litre unit. As BMW Group announced earlier this year, the Clubman will go on sale towards the end of 2007. -Continued: Click “Read More…” below for more high-res images

GENEVA: MINI claims Clubman name for its "Shooting Brake" model which goes on sale before the end of 2007

Since they’ve already unveiled a whole pack of concepts at every major car show the past two years (MINI Concept Frankfurt, MINI Concept Tokyo, MINI Concept Detroit & MINI Concept Geneva), it was about time we heard something about the production model. Dubbed Clubman and not Traveller as everybody thought, the extended-length MINI will have a design similar to the various concepts offering more versatility to potential MINI buyers. Expect the MINI Clubman to be offered with the same engine range as the hatch including tuned-up JCW versions. According to MINI, the Clubman will be available in Europe before the end of 2007 which means early 2008 for the States. -Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see the official press release

    PRESS RELEASE: New MINI Clubman

Today at the International Automobile Salon in Geneva, MINI has announced that the next derivative in its model range will be called MINI Clubman. Based on a concept first shown in Frankfurt in 2005, a ‘Shooting Brake’ body-styled car will be on sale in the UK before the end of 2007.

The new car promises to be distinctive, yet authentically embody the MINI character. Offering more versatility without compromising the revered chassis of current Hatch models, the production version of the car is further evidence of MINI’s aim to break boundaries in car design.

Historically, ‘Shooting Brake’ models are so-called due to a combination of premium two-door styling, with added interior flexibility for owners leading active lifestyles. The new car takes inspiration and styling cues from the Morris Mini Traveller, which experienced widespread success between 1960-69.

2008 Mini Traveller Scooped

It’s been nearly two years since we first laid our eyes on the Mini Traveller Concept Frankfurt and its colourful spouses, the…witty named Detroit, Geneva & Tokyo Concepts. However, it’s not over yet since we’re waiting for the Traveller to make a comeback at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Only now, it’s going to be the final production version, which will go on sale in Europe in 2008. Automotorundsport has managed to scoop a bunch of pictures of the production version during test runs. Interesting enough, the car spied seems to be fitted with opposite-hinged rear doors, though the duck-tape may have been used to fool us. In any case, the Traveller will be definitely more practical and spacey than the new MINI with which it'ill share the same engine range. Via: Automotorundsport
